Can you tell the difference btw 30FPS 60FPS 144FPS?
... I am starring at the battle benchmark running in loop while I capped the framerate with MSI Afterburner/RTSS @ 30-60-144FPS and imagine seeing the Ice Queen casting pink unicorns after 30 minutes, losing my mind.

Can anyone from their multiplayer experience convince me to not run the game in 30FPS@33.3ms?

Are the animations looking 'smoother' with more frames? Am I just not seeing it anymore? To my - very old eyes - the TW engine animation system seems 'optimized' @ 30FPS.

I am not asking you to indulge yourself in yet another '60FPS' rap battle. I am just asking, if any of you, who played the game many more hours than I ever did, do 'feel' a difference with higher frames. Smother gameplay. Higher responsiveness. Sensual. Non-technical. Experiences.

That's all it takes to convince me.

I do play competitive RTS games and used to play Quake 3, UT, etc. I know about the 'tick-rate in Street Fighter and CSGO or the (huge) difference btw framerates when playing racing games or sims which are build around 60FPS (or more). I just don't see it in 'Action Adventure titles, or turn-based games ... and atm also not in TW battles.

30FPS saves me like 100-200 Watts per frame and keeps my PCs @ 30 deg Celsius cool. But, I would switch, if I can follow your reasoning why.

The human eye can't see more than 6 fps anyway.

Can I tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps? Yes, but it's nothing mayor.
If you play on consoles there's no stuttering is there. Heck many a console port is capped at 30 and they play fine without any stuttering.

Can I see the difference between 60 and 144 fps? nope.

Can I see the difference when my fps fluctuates. Hell yes. I notice that.
But if a game runs on a stable 30 fps or 144 fps I barely notice a difference. But if a game fluctuates between say 50 and 60 fps, I notice that, it annoys me.

tl;dr stable fps good, fluctuating fps bad.

The human eye does not see in FPS, it sees in motion. ...

I could not agree more.

I have had anatomy classes in med-school. The human eyes (also ears) are terrible, compared to more specialized species.

We also 'see with our brain'. It is only through 'processing' that we can make sense of the blurry shapes and colors we see. Our brain needs to comprehend it.

=========

But, again - I fear, this discussion is sliding into the generalized "60FPS or bust" non-sensical rap battle (= people offering general opinions on a subject they are not experts in) of 'pro and con', instead what my initial question was:

"Does higher framerate - in the most technical sense - offer a sensually 'better experience' in Total War?"

In game development, this is something outside the general statements of what the human eyes (or brain) can do or not.

I was asking along the more technical side of 'rendering optimization' and 'keyframe animation' rather then what any given user in the comment says about their general experiences in life. This discussion has been done a million times since the Internet started?

Hur hur. Yes when put next to each other their are differences. Human brains see such things easily when put side to side.

Now go play a game where you think it's on 60 fps, yet it runs on 30. Will you actually notice it? No, you will not.

It just depend on people.
I played Bloodborne wich is capped at 30 FPS and it was very noticable.
It also depend on the game, the faster the camera movement, the more FPS matter.

i find the difference between 30fps and 60fps MASSIVE, like night and day
Difference between 60fps and 144fps is a big difference too if you have a 144hz monitor

I don't believe you at all when you say you barely notice a difference if it runs on 30fps or 144fps lol

Oh yes, I can clearly notice that the 30 fps is set to a lower graphic fidelity, just to make it appear less appealing to the 60 fps.

Now actually acknowledge the second part of my quote, where you start a game you think is 60 fps, but is actually running 30. Then be honest and do you notice it's just 30 fps?

Again, go look at console games, which generally are 30 fps, then the PC variant. Does the console version suddenly look sluggish when you play it? No.

Then don't. I don't care.
I think there is a difference between each of the fps benchmarks. I don't think the difference is worth the investment to get the higher fps in a top down strategy game.

Yes we will notice. It's a major difference between 30 and 60.
It's not just moving around but everything feels choppy.

In jRPGs they often have these anime cutscenes in 24 FPS because "Muh cinematic experience" and you can instantly tell.
Or when normal cutscenes using ingame engine and it's 30 FPS and you instantly can tell it.

It's not an impossible thing to detect. Now detecting the difference between 120 and lets say 200 FPS. That is going to be harder. But not with 30 vs 60 FPS.
Spookymancer 19 feb, 2024 @ 1:10
The standard frame rate for movies is 24 FPS.
The Hobbit released at 48 FPS.
Literally everyone noticed.
Yes

frames are important . I once played total warhammer at ~800x600 resolution on a laptop away from home, to achieve a desirable framerate. Looked like a sprite based 90s game
Nero 19 feb, 2024 @ 19:48
for strategy games, 45 - 50 fps is all I need. But in a shooter or a racing game, 60 is a must. The more the better, but you pay dearly for more.
