The difficulty and complexity of the game differs widely depending on the race (and even faction) you play as. Try a few more and you might find one that fits your playstyle.
Also i wouldn't trust what the game says is "beginner friendly", for example the Empire might have been beginner friendly once upon a time, but then they got a rework in game 2 adding more complex systems and in game 3 they start out surrounded by enemies (the empire AI factions having a very passive AI thus getting picked off quickly).
So at first I wanted to try the guy from the prologue.. but I got super confused from the rip because the race places completely differently.
Then I was like oh I know lets try to play the Russian Ice people again so I tried that. Got way farther but then got pretty upset when I started losing my main garrisons and it felt like all hope was lost. Felt like everyone I tried to challenge were waaaay more advanced than me. In-fact I convinced another faction to join me and was surprised at how much crap they had. But I still kept losing.
Now I just started again on the like Demon blood god dude who likes skulls. I like that when he beats a garrison (<-- im spelling that way wrong huh?) he gets like a little bonus army.
But yeah just normal difficulty. I am considering lowing it just to learn lol.
Also, this game is better played being aggressive. Simple equations:
1. More land = more money = bigger army = capture more land (repeat)
2. Fighting battles = post battle income / loot / sack settlements = more money = build more structures in your cities = more money = bigger army (repeat)
Turtling is generally not a good strategy in this game.
I’d recommend dark elves but I just know them so well, so don’t know really a good beginner faction. Also all I really play so again, would recommend if had a solid idea for you, maybe one of the daemon factions like khorne where can just rampage and slaughter and not care as much about being on defence.
Baseline easiest probably khorne in Immortal empires and realm of chaos or Nurgle in RoC to learn.
Slaanesh works if you can micromanage units well.
Tzeentch isn't great to play.
Daemon of chaos has a rough start, although i never played him in IE.
Nurgle's first enemy Ghorst is a pain in the ass for a new player in IE.
Kislev has a poor start as well in IE.
For a game 3 race, Cathay would be a good campaign too (either faction will work) as the starting position is fairly safe and it is also a traditional melee + range/artillery faction, with strong hybrid lords and a good economy.
Both HE and Cathay will allow a beginner to learn the game without getting slammed too hard by mistakes.
Cathay is among the easiest factions, the iron dragon one is the easier of the two.
Nurgle is a bit complex for new players (more than Skaven even IMO) and you're right near Order factions.
Definitely Cathay for a safer start.
the race of warhammer 3 have mostly hard starting position in IE except cathay and mabye the demon of chaos but they are wierd when starting.
Cathay spawn next to the limit of the map so you don't have to much side to manage and you can have some friend.
No defensive alliances, no military ones, dont talk to strangers. Their wars become your wars.
Play dwarfs if you want to go slow. Good luck.
When I started playing the game back in WH1 I just played the Empire over and over until I got it right. All other advice in here is also good, some races are harder than others.
Honestly, if you are really struggling, try to watch some general guide on yt and pick something easy like High Elves in IE. Cathay has a lot of those little bs mechanics so it might be a bit overwhelming.
Don't give up, you will get better with practice.
