value diff; tomb kings, they got it all, monsters, giants shooting bone bows, construct scorpions etc. with all the other undead stuff.
sadly i find their lords... tame.. don't know why they just dont feel as enjoyably evil as V Count :P
but if you like those its a LOT of value bc they got soo much stuff in their armies and can be played in many ways.
V Coast is more "are you really into that?" it's kinda weird how all the rotting zombies hanging from literal giant bats can still steady aim a musket and hit anything;
so the lvl off "belief in magic you muggle" is very high with this one and frankly its why i rarely play them, tried many times but it just feels ... odd to look at :P
but again if thats your stick they are kinda awesome and they got some of the Coolest LL in the game and some really cool units if you can ignore how a literal gotting wet zombie can sharpshoot better than the oldest woodelven master archer :P
Beastman... are just cool.
like minotaur rushes forward. hidden troops all over. etc.
their lords are midway in coolness; no mounts so that's kinda tame.
and you get quite little for what you give;
like beatman are not very flashed out even now.
BUT they do have one of the COOLEST animation movement on that BIG BLOB monster, thats just too awesome to be ignored (hmm i gotta do some beastman soon i guess).
as said, beastman are just kinda cool, if you are into minotaur type monsters (they need some hydra kinda stuff, it seems like hydra's would look awesome with them, but they do have some cool stuff, just not much and their base units can feel underwhelming in many aspects; you play them for the monsters or because you just love how it looks when they mass over enemies kinda like zombies; just faster and like mino minos (sadly not all as cool looking... hmmm mod maybe to make all beastman more minotaur like :P)
First aesthetics, which you must decide yourself.
Second, what campaign playstyle do you like? If you prefer standard faction mechanics (building settlements, expand on your borders etc.) with unit caps and no recruitment/upkeep costs, then Tomb Kings. If you like pure horde faction (with settling only to do rituals to unlock better units/campaign progress), then Beastmen. And if you prefer faction, which can be horde/settled/making outposts, then Vampire Coast.
Third, what type of battles/army composition do you like? If you like primarily melee and rush, Beastmen. If you like ranged, gunpowder and artillery (+ powerful spells), Vampire Coast. And if you like balanced armies with powerful monsters/good artillery, Tomb Kings.
Personally if i had to choose just one, i would go with Tomb Kings, feels like you get the most for your money (V Coast really close behind).
But i definitely recommend all three, pick one that you want play the most and wait for good sales deals for the rest.
- what visual do you like ?
- what gameplay you like ?
gameplay wise:
- Beastmen have very unique lords and mechanics that set them apart from the other faction (in my opinion). very mobile armies, definition of burnt earth tactics. roster kindof balanced exept in artillery.
- vampire coast are very "niche" in the sense they don't seek to conquer all, they have a clear objective that require more exploration and battle than "conquest". roster ranged oriented
- tomb kings. ok, I'm not partial bc I LOVE them ^^ I find them very balanced and fun to play
you can either go the "ultra specialized army with monsters & magic horrors
OR go "lol I got 4 full sack of base skeletons" and simply crush anything under your foot... erm, bones.
BUT they also have the less "flavor" between lords. they pretty much all play the same and it can be very frustrating in early game when you don't have a lot of good troops/lot of armies
In the end, taurox, one of the beastmen, is probably my more memorable playthrough.
but if you don't really know what gameplay you like, then go for the visuals ^^
you'll always be able to find mods to power up/balance your faction ^^
VC are ghost pirates and if you ditch your land and play them like a horde they're the most "free" faction. Lose a town? means nothing (hopefully you didnt invest in it,) just keep your hordes alive and on the move. Sail the world setting up as many coves as possible for income and return to your land objectives *cough Luthor* when you're ready. In my last Luthor game I had him take the sea lanes to Cathay and set up coves all along his journey back.
TK are pretty beefy last time I played them. They'd moved a bunch of units around in the roster so you can get them earlier. They're the opposite of the VC in that they're completely bound to their buildings for units/unit caps and everything else. Also if you do them right they're very heavy on the heroes and crafting things to supe them up. They gain (free) armies throughout the game so by midgame you'll be rocking like 4-6 armies no problem.
Tough choice if you gotta pick only one, have had fun with all of them.
TLDR: I'd say the beasts are the least fun atm, just because there's no point (too easy). TK also a bit untuned atm. VC are tricky, in that the game tells you to do one thing (like conquer Lustria,) but 1000% times easier to ditch your settlements and live the pirates life. Yeah I'd say VC.
2. Vampire Coast
3. Cows
they are my 3rd favorite faction in the game. With Gunnery Wight cannon line you can alpha strike legendary lords at the beginning of the battle
Depth Guard are good now and the berserkers beat Khorne infantry. I use Promethean Gunnery mobs to be mobile cover for them
the only thing bad, which can be significant, is that WH2 factions are missing their campaign cinematics. they really add to the story telling feel.
these can be viewed on youtube, but it can be difficult to avoid spoilers
1) Vampire Coast
2) Tomb Kings
3) Beast men (too easy I think (especially with Taurox and even worse if you pick up the Sword of Khaine) plus I don't like hordes, I like to have cities, but that's just me)
VC aren't worth it the way they are right now, with a future rework / update maybe.
