how is auto resolve calculated?
I know in Age of Wonders: Planetfall that the game literally simulates the entire battle using AI so every possible upgrade and mod actually does influence the battle, but I suspect this isn't the case in this game total warhammer 3. Does anyone know precisely what goes into auto resolve calculations for this game?

No one knows "precisely ". Unit stats goes into calculation with armor and ranged armor-piercing being heaviest influence.

Does anyone know if leader abilities go into it? If I learn some aoe spells does it influence the battle? Do the passive ones affect it?

It's mainly about the worth of a unit. The more upgrades and experience it has the more worth it is. You can see this for yourself if you set up a custom battle. A lord with all abilities will be more expensive than a lord without them, meaning you can save money and field more troops if you strip the lord of all abilities you don't want to use to begin with. This worth (or potential, as some call it) is the deciding factor.

Note however that AR for settlements is still not working correctly. The defender gets a bonus in AR which is supposed to simulate the strategic advantage and the towers. Although most minor settlement battles now take place on open field the bonus was not removed, leading to some weird behaviour of AR.

I´m unsure about the spells or some abilities, but those which affect unit stats definitely play a role. Also lord or hero level - somehow You get better results with a higher level lord which invested all his points into the blue line than with a lvl 1 lord - even if there is no difference on him as leader or fighter.

I´m unsure if You can just spawn armies in the campaign. And if - someone had to do some testing, to figure out if certain skills or spells influence it. In game it´s hard to say, because You rarely have the same two armies fighting in autoresolve, with just one thing changed to it.
