Sun vs moon vs Star dragon?
Star dragon costs the most but imo is not the strongest, moons breath does far more.

i did several tests with their breath weapons, all shot from the side.

Vs artillery helstorm, Sun and star both destroyed 1 battery while moon took care of two on most tests.

Vs 0 armor infantry Sun did 100 more damage then moon but star dragon was almost at nothing.

Vs HIGH armor infantry sun came last but moon out performed star by farm.

VS single target i did tests VS Rogue idol with 150 armor.

Sun did 330-400 damage per hit
Moon 600-750 per hit
Star 700-850 per hit.

Start clearly outperformed but 700-850 on a big monster is basically nothing next to if you shot that breath vs an artillery to destroy several pieces or demolish an infantry unit to half or less HP.

Star dragon does have better stats then the other two dragons but the cost also goes up. So IMO moon is actually far better then star dragon.

You really like the frost phoenix over fire or arcane(and dragons)? I personally dislike frost the most, it has a nice aura but i miss the resurrection and dps the other 2 have.

Mainly because of the aura and it´s the tankiest - and faster and smaller than a dragon. Resurrection is random - i wouldn´t risk it. If they could be recruited in one turn perhaps. For dragons i would use them as a mount for the lord, because they get additional buffs then - and it´s more a matter of visual taste which to get. One is enough. I would go 2 or 3 frost phoenix to either take out artillery, or to support taking out tankier infantry - or to block cavalry, or to engage archers. Or just have them as fast airborne cavalry. Usually they get the job done, while the other phoenixes go down (if they don´t get resurrected). That being said - i haven´t tested them in focus fire in WH3. :o)

And for the breath attack: i usually forget to use it, because i would need to breath from the side or above, but i like to make use of the melee power of the dragon. But the last dragon i used was Malekith, who could solo an army on it...

That's because all 3 dragons of the Helves have a different breath attack.

Sun dragon spreads it's flames over a area with little overal damage. Great for infantry. Especially chaff infantry.
Moon dragon has a smaller spread, for more overal damage per flame that hits. It's best target is elite infantry / cavalry due to the spread and damage aspect.
Star dragon has almost no spread and unlike the other 2 does mostly AP damage on it's breath attack.

For a sun dragon you should be flanking, spreading the fire out across the flank of a enemy infantry unit.
Moon dragon should be hovering closeby.
Stardragon is the most effective when it's right above a single target. Especially when it's netted and unable to move. It's best used against other Sems and lords.

Black, Zombie and Forest dragons are akin to Sundragon, high spread.
Frost Wyrm is akin to a Moon dragon with it's breath.
While the chaos dragon is akin to the Star dragon with it's breath type.

I hope this explination helps.

Star Dragon breath deals the most AP damage, but has a very narrow "beam". Best against a big, slow(or netted) and very heavily armored units.
It also has good enough stats to fight high value targets(lords, heroes and big monsters) in melee(very high MA and Weapon Strength and good amount of health).

Moon is the best "all-rounder". Decent AP ratio on the breath and can hit multiple models fairly well, depending on how far away you use it.
It is a good fighter in melee, but not as good as the Star Dragon. Best used as a Shock unit in combination with other units to overwhelm a flank(Terror bomb).

Sun can completely wreck lightly armored units(it has the lowest AP ratio). I have seen it deal about 2000 damage if you have the right angle and targets(yes, it can potentially hit multiple units). It has a very wide spread. Of course this also means that it is far less effective against single or low entity units when compared to the other two, and it is not that good against armor.
It is also pretty fast.
Not as durable as the Moon or Star Dragon, but arguably better as a Shock unit(faster speed and more Charge bonus). Get in, route a unit, get out, repeat.

Phoenixes are pretty good for their price, and very fast, but they are not as durable and are not nearly as good in melee, so you cant rely on them to fight anything powerful when compared to dragons.
The Flamespire and the Arcane Phoenix both have powerful abilities for dealing damage, but you have to get very close to your enemies, which most often mean very easy to hit with ranged attacks.
The Frostheart Phoenix is a great support unit and is quite durable(when compared to the other fliers), but its damage potential is also substantially lower.

I would say, if you want a good and powerful "terror bomb", go Arcane Phoenix. It will melt high armor units on the frontline with its ability. It is very fast and reasonably durable and a decent fighter.
If you want something that can "snipe" high priority targets, like enemy lords and big monsters, the Star Dragon is the best.
