I think that goes double for multiplayer.
Additionally, they are particularly vulnerable to massed ranged attacks since they mostly have relatively low armor and literally tower over the battlefield. Which is another thing that goes double for multiplayer.
I still use them, but then I'm more of a roleplaying guy than a min maxing legendary difficulty guy
More armor and added missile resistance means they no longer fall over just because a few units of T1 archers targeted them for 20 seconds. And a lot of the negative view of them has to do with their old stats.
They were definitely not t4-5 material to me.
Like every unit in the game, it depends on how u use them.
However, giants are usually slow and can easily gang up on by archery, and guns fires.
For Greenskins, they were less useful than Arachnaroks (and 5 tier vs 4 before greenskin change)
For WoC, they were worse than Shaggoths, for Norsca - inferior to Mammoths etc.
Now, WoC can basically get them in any mountains. Not guaranteed, but when you play enough in mountain areas you can have a bunch of them, and early in the game too, when they rock.
Beastmen get them quite early, too - before other monsters, - and they are cheaper to increase capacity. So, very useful, too.
And their increased missile resistance, armor and damage definitely make them competitive enough.
