Empire use to be this cake walk, "not anymore" and thats fine.
Some say its still easy, but who knows.
I'm currently on my best run having secured my borders to the south, enough at least to keep kemmler and the brettonians attacking me (they hated me for killing marienburg). I've dealt with khazrak, he was pretty straight forward, but now I'm stuck fighting a level 33 Vlad, which dwarfs my 13 Franz, who has taken much of the east and Festus is also enjoying an assault. I've got disciples of the maw clawing up my ass and throt has popped down for a jaunt.
There's also a chaos gate open, presumably so belakor can swoop in and have a shindig.
This all happening whilst durthu is eating through the AI provinces I havnt secured yet. I'm just waiting for him to declare war on me.
All in all, it's going well... I'm losing army after army at the moment and I canr seem to kill vlad. He just regens too much!
Maybe thats why
It's baffling that it's listed as a recommended first campaign. It's like who ever did that actively wan'ts people to say "f**k this game"
Would your authority increase the more elector counts you confederate? It doesn't make sense that your position is weaker because more people join you...
Never confederated until later game, absorbed Balthasar on like turn 60? and it went great. Got the Wissenland war event around turn 35ish. Had a huge battle with what's-his-face and then swept through the Nuln province, gaining access to their special steam tank. Almost never touched the influence points, always used them to avert civil wars and the authority just kept coming. Think when I saved it was at like 17 or more and I was around turn 75-80ish.
The healing mage + tanks out front + rifles combo still works wonders, just a meatgrinder. Been using this config: 4-5 greatswords/infantry, 4-5 rifles, 3 hellfire rockets, 4-5 tanks, a healing mage, another hero or two + w/e wildcards look fun.
The tanks sit way out front spaced out, shooting things and taking aggro (on guard mode so they stay put). The hellfires wreck things. Best to take them off fire at will and direct them manually once the enemy frontlines close in (use guard mode), they play fast and loose and *will* target units engaged in melee with your own troops.
The riflemen shred the enemy troops that start clustering around your tanks and the healer keeps those tanks healthy. Pace yourself with your magic, the minor healing spells can go a long way with those tanks.
And the infantry you want mostly at the sides and a little bit forward with maybe 1 near the rockets/behind center rifle line for emergencies/flyers. They can deal with w/e goes wide around the tank line and doesn't get aggroed. Then use w/e wildcards you want, magic, heroes, etc. and you golden.
I still find Empire vanilla, but thank you for encouraging me to see where they're at. Yeah they definitely have a rough start with all the new enemies.
Main points:
* Plan on taking settlements that you can sell for a hefty profit. I'm talking like Kemmler decides to take a fort- so you take it from him and sell it to the Franch for like 10k. And if you're *for sure* going to lose a settlement: sell it! If the faction you sell it to is also at war with whoever's gonna take it you can retake it or sell it again soon after.
* Keep as much of that influence currency as possible and never confed until you're way past ready. Confederating just means you have that much more land to defend and the costs can cripple you.
* Play defensive and just focus your starting province for a while. Any sackings are gonna set you back for turns, don't let it happen even once. Expect Khazrak to pay you a visit from the north pretty quickly off the start.
* Fight every battle to minimise casualties. Having no downtime for the first dozen or so turns is massive, do not trust autoresolve.
* Healing mage + tanks + rifles is mega.
Edit: and I just saw the update to the post lol. Glad you got it down, long live the Empire!
also just download unit mods :P
This is the way.
