Remember the lessons taught in the tutorial- Getting people to non-aggression with you removes an enemy you can fight later, so you can focus on fewer enemies at once to better handle them?
Granted I do think Yuri needs a second look over to stand apart from other daemon princes.
I did try to focus on a monogod build several time, the real problem is money: Like Ive said you cant afford anything but lousy marauders at the start and the other faction have access to more consistent demon or WoC Armies which practically steam roll me: Garrisons full of Pink Horrors are no joke.
There is a bit of power gap between Daniel and everything around him, which is further aggravated by the fact that his starting army is expensive, but given it's mish-mash nature, it aint consistent or powerful.
My first suggestion would be killing Malus in the first few turns (While it can be a bit tricky it is do'able, regardless of difficulty). He seems almost hard coded to declare war on you even if he likes you.
You can be mostly friendly with many of the "chaos" factions around you (for a big chunk of the game at least) by putting points into "Respect of the North". This allows you to choose your battles more.
I highly recommend putting some points into the Nurgle skill tree (Impure Prayer > Rotting Nourishment) early to get the increased army replenishment (I tend to max it out).
As Warzone mentioned hyper focusing on a single god will make it way easier since with the set bonuses you can get after dedicating combined with other upkeep buffs can basically get a free god specific army for Daniel (fill it with the most elite units you have access to asap). That said a slower buildup dividing your glory between the gods will make you more powerful in the long run.
Also get creative with Deamon Prince builds. For example if you want your Deamon Prince to be a chaff clearing melee combatant then i highly recommend the Khorne head giving regen in combat combined with both the Nurgle wings and any of the tails that gives a mortis engine sorta effect that damage nearby enemies (Love that combo). Also do not be afraid to complete rebuild him from one battle to another to target specific enemy threats (His strong point is not just growing in power by unlocking parts, but being able to change those parts on a whim).
In my last VH/VH vanilla run as Daniel I had everyone around me non aggro pacted asap except for the side I went conquering on- but I'm pretty sure Malus was the first target so I could border more chaos. Chaos that loved me cuz of the huge diplo bonus.
So anyways, carefully nurtured a very comfortable diplomatic climate all around the home area and pushed East. Had plenty to conquer, didn't face too many troubles as it was all on one front and the homeland was left to develop without much need for defense. Really can't stress how big a +30 chaos diplo bonus by lvl like 4-5 is, you're the belle of the ball (still need to be choosy about allies.)
In my last *modded* Daniel run I started in Ulthuan and it was some fun hard fighting earlygame against the elves. Was also using the DP overhaul mod which I highly recommend. Vanilla Daniel is like 75% sidegrades, lots of useless parts and relatively few part sets. The overhaul mod is about 100x better.
General Daemons advice: use chaos warriors/chosen. Tends to work out well for me. Yeah you have daemons, but some good solid dudes with shields and heavy armour moving decently fast (Slaanesh) are just more reliable. Especially once you get some chosen, should really aim for them asap. Might need the WoC dlc to get those units as Daniel.
And in the beginning play nice with all chaos- but not too nice with whichever direction you'd like to expand into, and kill Malus. Must always kill Malus. Diplo bonus is massive, go for it asap. Worth topping it up with the second tier one for the extra 15 as well.
As for good chaos units they can get quickish: chaos warriors of Slaanesh, Slaanesh cavalry are fantastic. Beasts of Nurgle are cheap/low tier and tend to overperform as they both debuff and regen. Daemonettes tear things up you just gotta make sure they don't end up taking the brunt of the frontline (they're fast enough you can easily flank every time.) Nurgle heroes are great for healing, also can pretty quickly get the damage reflection spell. Slap that on a beast of Nurgle when it's aggroing a crowd and it'll shred.
Hope some of this helps, GL.
