It is very fun to stay where you are, keep the homeland and fight the green skins in bad land. Make a 12/20 in bad land in ~turn 4, and enough in capital to take the green skins settlement there.. You won't afford the armies, the income will be something like -1200 in worst cases (don't do harder than that) and what you have to do is to find some green skins to kill so you will earn the gold from the battles.
Recommended early game armies:
Capital: 3 spear men, 6 archers (one of them has higher tier), another spell caster, 1 archer kind of cavalry, disband the melee cavalry they give you at beginning
Badland: keep the 3 higher tier melee troops, and 1 spear men, so it will be 4 melee troops, make archers to 5, and keep the eagle claw or whatever the name is thing. Don't let it die. Use hero to tank everything. Make another spell caster when you have enough gold for healing or making AOE damage.
Calculate the income carefully in each turn, make sure you have a good battle to fight before being bankrupt. I did it 4 times, it should get through very tight but just enough.
When you kill many of green skins, you will find yourself have some free gold to make the 1000 income settlement, do it lvl 3 and make a defending wall there. (I don't remember the name, the one on the right side of where you should be attacking very first). You will need the defending wall against skarbrand. Don't take all the settlements on the north side from green skins too early, their armies are the source of income.
For the smaller settlement in bad land, don't try to defend them at the beginning, when it is over 20 turns, you will have gold to make defending. If green skins take them, let it be, you will take them back. Don't waste gold building those small settlement in bad land in very early game. Keep them lvl 1. Green skins almost never burn or destroy them so don't worry about them.
Be careful with N'kari in homeland, he (she?) is very OP for high elves, because his troops are too small sized to hit by arrows, too fast (75 move speed) and they make ridiculous damage. Plus trees are everywhere. Hit auto resolve when it is a must. (everything introduced in WH3 breaks something :O ) If you really want to try the battle, reduce the number of archers and eagle claws, make enough strong melee troops.
You will want to kill the beastmen before they ♥♥♥♥ everywhere. Do it ~turn 10. The beastmen AI is a bieeeitch, it does only one thing - try to steal your settlements when your armies are not there and burn them, you won't even be able to rebuild the settlement before killing them, so kill them early before it is too late. Skarbrand will probably declare war at you when you kill the beast men, use the capital in badland to defend. It seems like skarbrand never rebuilds his armies fully so once you kill the 20/20, he is pretty much done..
After killing all the green skins and secure 2 states in badland and 2 in homeland, taking care of N'kari, you will have 3 very high level spell casters riding dragons and Eltharion him self tanking a full army together with the hero. The rest part of the game will be as easy/boring as green skins... Just make some troops and hit auto resolve until you get whatever victory you want.
Make sure you can easily make short victory with green skins (which is too easy/boring compared to Eltharion) before trying it.
Don't go back to capital, it is a huge waste of very limited fun part of the game...
If you like capital, do it with Tyrion. It makes no sense to play `another Tyrion` (you even had to pay for extra dlc to get Eltharion, why doing it if it is another Tyrion?).
The only drawback is, when you finish the Eltharion campaign in this way, you will find most of the rest factions are boring..
