So base trait and the Boons don't matter in the long run if you are going to dedicate the hero.
I know the God specific WoC factions (Festus etc) get a technology that lets you recruit the god specific ones directly. I don't think I've seen that for the Undivided factions though.

As far as i can tell the only traits lords keep when ascending (either being dedicated or going deamon prince) is legendary lord defeat traits.
That said, for the lords they also get a bonus trait depending on what they were before ascending.
If you (for example) had a Chaos Sorcerer Lord with fire magic that you dedicated and turned into another magic school, he would get a trait that gives him the passive lore of fire buff when casting.
If you instead ascended a Chaos Sorcerer Lord to the same school of magic (So a metal sorcere lord into a Tzeentch metal sorcerer lord) he gets a trait that gave either a cost reduction for spells from that school or a cooldown reduction (i can't remember, both traits exist, you can get the other one later when ascending to deamon prince).
This is disappointing, I really liked the idea of getting one particular Exalted Hero and watching him grow through the ranks into the WoC Elite forces, eventually dedicating him to a god and having that play out nicely.
Right now, it feels like "oh just grab any git until level 5, then hope for a good reroll into some traits and boons you actually want"

If its sorcerers it depends on their school of magic (certain schools will always get the option for certain marks). Unless you are playing the special champions of chaos factions (For example: Playing as Vilitch your sorcerers always have the option for the mark of Tzeentch no matter their school of magic).
Sucks losing a good trait like +25% missile resistance for something useless.
It would also be nice to be able to choose one of the three Path to Glory buffs to keep when ascending, so that it feels like the character is actually getting stronger (as opposed to just being reset). It's a fair tradeoff considering the amount of XP they lose.
For the marking, it makes a lot less sense, just because they got a mark of a god shouldn't remove their "hideous visage", they are still just has hideous as before. Though when they ascend it would make sense to lose that, since it's physical, but still doesn't make much sense for personality traits to change.
However, it's clearly intended behaviour, because one of the traits discounts the cost to dedicate the lord, and that trait wouldn't work very well if it didn't get rerolled after dedication.
I really hope they change this.
