Anyone else taking forever to Update and play?

Just curious, i have been downloading and updating since about 1pm est. I have super fast, wired internet. I tested another game and it would have downloaded a 100gb game in about 12 minutes but this has been a slog. Finally finished downloading but still have like 40 minutes to update. I also have a brand new PC rig btw. I'm guessing i am not the only one ?

I've been waiting for about 5 hours now for the game to download, install and whatever Steam is doing that makes that process take so long.

only the download uses the internet. The patching is taking most of the time. That is done on your PC. It is inserting new data into your files and reassembling them. Then reinstalling the game. Steam has gone to a patcher. Its not like when Steam just updated and downloaded all the changed files and wrote them over the top of the old files. Updates are getting to big. This would have been over 100GB with the old method. Steam obviously wants to save bandwith.

I think many people stopped playing 3 and uninstalled it while waiting for I.E. to come out. Now they are battering the servers all download the full game.

It is patching.

Patching takes a lot of time, since it is constantly unpacking data/asset containers, pushing files into memory, then writing files unto disk ... can take forever. It also is not using the full available bandwidth for that reason. It's a Steam patch thing - especially with huge games.

You can see this, inside your Steam Client Download page - the bar that shows 'disk' activity vs 'network' activity.

I uninstalled the game and am downloading the complete thing (65GB compressed).

Probably much faster than patching, with a fast Internet connection.

I also have been waiting for a long time. Then again my Internet is super slow.

steam just sucks. and has gotten alot worse. other platforms handle patching/updating far better.

yeah didn't think it was just me. My download speed would start at like 50mb a sec then jump up and down , finally to zero. I had to keep restarting to get it finished. The updating is taking forever. I have a fast PC and SSD but that doesn't seem to effect the update speed. Im sure jakethebusker is right regarding tons of people re-downloading the entire game. The crappy thing is we will be obviously getting tons of updates from here on out,though thats great and all but hopefully we don't have to suffer through hours and hours of updating for every update. I just wanna play IE man lol

lucky internet.... i live outside of town on old DSL.... the 65 gig download is only gonna take 19 and a half hours.... stupid internet.. yes i just bought the game for IE but i played it on game pass that i got..... but never got far because for some reason every time it got an update game pass required to redownload the entire game........... so much pain
