But valiant should generally be easier.
Close usually means you'll probably win with effort but will take a good bit more casualties.
That said, sometimes the autoresolve says win when you'd surely lose in manual due to enemy lords
Or occasionally a bunch of units that in theory have bad autoresolve ratings, but you know in practice are the absolute bane of your own forces. Or sometimes they have good AR ratings, you have better, but no means of countering them.
I used to run into that a lot with Marauder Champions early game. Archers, Spears, and Franz aren't enough to deal with a couple units of champions. They're too heavily armored and good at fighting.
In any case though, I personally always try to fight manually. Unless you're hugely outnumbered, it's usually more beneficial to you to fight and cause as many casualties to the enemy army as possible, even if it does end in defeat. Make it so they either can't advance with their next turn, or if they do, they will most likely lose in the next battle.
The AI will usually clump up really bad while doing that, making them ideal targets for AoE spells and artillery.
