They not unkillable
The strange thing is that the mortis engine would be disintegrating if the Lord of the army was dead, Unless you mistook a secondary lord for the primary in a reinforcement battle. Still it is fair to say that mortis engines are the enemy to low damage tough units. I suggest using great weapon or halbred chaos warriors or anti large knights. (not sure what mortals kugath can now access)
Also Kugarth showed as being able to kill the Mortis Engine on his own.
So heroes/lords or max 1 melee unit or snipe with ranged units.
Not sure why/how Ku´gath was not able to kill it, he totally should have been unless almost dead. My guess would be your plaguebearers took so much damage that it inflicted the army losses. Mortis engine is *not* very strong in melee at all.
