Idk what buffs greasus gives to ironguts but i think gorgers can get better stats but i was playing skrag so maybe ironguts are better for greasus.
Heck, I find leadbelchers underperform when compared to Maneaters with ogre pistols. Just wish maneaters would come in different looks other then "Sartossa"
Stonehorns are a amazing unit period. Gorgers are somewhat subpar for the final battle without Skragg's regen.
But yeah, Ironguts fall of hard lategame.
If you are going full ranged or brings lots of ranged make sure to pick your targets. If you don't they will underperfrom quiet a bit and end up in melee after using up all ammo.
IIRC Pistol Maneaters have more raw single-target DPS on their guns than Leadbelchers, but Leadbelchers are better at wrecking infantry and cavalry formations because the cannonballs can plow through multiple models.
Less of a concern for survival battles, consideirng you can spend supplies to restock ammo on your units in those.
That's interesting, I didn't think that Maneaters would outpreform Ironguts in a main-stay battle line.
So, my current composition is Hero Squad (4), 3 GW Crushers, 6 Ogre Pistol Maneaters, 5 Leadbelchers, and 2 Ironblasters.
Ironguts IMO have a niche even lategame against low-AP enemies, especially armored ones. (So, stuff like the basic variants of Jade and Chaos Warriors, for example.) But Great Weapon Maneaters do just entirely outperform them in terms of offensive punch. Against single-entity monsters - which generally have a lot of AP damage - GW Maneaters are one of the strongest units in the Ogre roster, alongside GW Crushers and the Ironblaster.
Funfact, Maneaters with ogre pistols actually DO penetrate models. Not quite sure vs large targets, but 1 shot can kill several infantry models.
Maneaters with Ironfists come in with a 60 armor after research, 68 in Greasus his army. Not to mention they have I believe a baseline 50 Md, a 35% shield, Higher weapon strength etc.
In my older save of last weak, I have several r8 Maneaters with ironfists that have a 64 Ma, 74 Md 121 weapon strength, 68 armor etc. If you want a tanky Ogre unit, it's the maneater with Ironfist. Ironguts do not even come close, even with their 108 armor.
For my final fight against Belakor on L/VH, I ran Greasus, Hunter, Butcher (Maw), 6 Ironguts, 3 Leadbelchers, 2 Ironblasters, 2 Stonehorn (Melee variant) and 4 Crushers (Great Weapons).
Greasus himself is my least favourite of the two legendary lords, being really slow, but at least he packs a serious wallop when he gets there. The hunter, mounted on a Stonehorn, is a monster if you give him decent equipment. I also decided to only have one spellcaster, and settled on a Maw Butcher because it's a balance of offensive damage spells and the pretty nice Trollguts regen heal. I left out a Firebelly, as I only wanted one spellcaster, but if I had two, I would have picked a Butcher of Beasts instead, for the extra value in a summoned Manticore and the buffs.
Why Ironguts? Because in the final battle, there isn't much with armour piercing. Biggest threats are generally Slaaneshi and Khorne units, but the others (specifically stuff like Plaguebearers) actually get out-tanked by Ironguts. The trick is not them doing more damage or having better protection vs ranged (where Ironfist Maneaters are vastly superior, like Rianne has pointed out) but having a durable frontline that's easy to get back thanks to unsummoning and it's reduced cost in comparison to Maneaters. Moreover, larger masses of infantry tend to surround your ogre units, and having a high block chance and high MD only affects the front in a 140 degree arc. That being said, there's nothing wrong with running the Ironfist Maneaters as an alternate frontline. They will be vastly superior fighting against anything that has armour piercing.
Leadbelchers are there to crunch infantry. They are only massively useful in the entry stage, stage 1 defense, stage 2 defense, and the transition between two and three to help with taking down the Soul Grinders, but they help speed things up fairly significantly in those areas. That being said, you may find better mileage with Maneater Pistols, Maneater GWs, or more Stonehorns.
Ironblasters are there for ranged anti-large. Currently they are incredibly potent, absolutely capable of annihilating any large targets with ease from pretty much max range. Just remember to keep them on a flat plane, as they are a cannon unit, which can be awkward for large portions of the fight.
Stonehorns - I use them for linebreaking or fighting alongside the hunter against large high value targets, such as Belakor himself. These guys mainly act as the anvil for the crushers, but do a good job by themselves.
Crushers (GW) - The army is decent at murdering infantry and has some alright anti-large, but most of it is tied up in ranged weapons, isn't dedicated to it, or tends to be slow to react to large threats. That's where the crushers round out the build, capable of destroying larger targets with vicious ease on a very mobile platform. Crushers are the better variant as unlike Mournfang, Crushers can actually sit and fight for a little bit.
Side notes - 1) Towers are going to be your best friends. Tier 4 towers are amazing but don't discount tier 3 and 2 towers if you want to get extra, disposeable summoned units before the next wave begins.
2) I generally didn't upgrade my units with the buffs available to ranged damage, melee damage or armour. I felt that having more, and keeping what I had topped off, was better than upgrading my force to be even more elite. Your mileage may vary.
3) I found the gun units to be awkward in the final section where Belakor spawns. I unsummoned them to gain their weight in supplies, then used those to obtain more Stonehorns and Crushers from the bonus pool. When the battle eventually stabilized I did summon the leadbelchers back to help kill infantry, but the Ironblasters were fully retired by that stage.
This is all I can remember right now, I might add to this later if I feel I missed out anything important.
Hope this helps, and good luck. Thanks for reading.
