the factions you mentioned are better, khorne is kinda op/broken atm and is by far the best.
you're 100% right that not having a real tech tree makes the deamon prince on the weaker side, even with set bonus i find myself using the gear i think is best and its still lackluster.
I think Demons and Kislev have the hardest campaigns, although Demons it's mainly the start when you have armies from Wood Elves, Empire, Kislev and Orcs descending upon you but once you get a grip on those it gets easier where as Kislev you are constantly under assault and your enemies only multiply as time goes on. Kislev have a good roster though.
For Demon Prince of Chaos, it's best to focus him in one area, ie. Tank, DPS, Magic etc but remember he will never be as good as a dedicated lord. Also Scarbrand is insane so he will never come close to his epicness.
I wouldn't say daemons is a bad faction, but I agree it's definitely very difficult due to how all of these factors play together.
