Rift Campaign really sucks (yes, a million of these kinds of threads, but here's my 'why')
Gonna give an example. My first campaign (spoilers for final battle here below, in case you care) all I knew about the final fight was "lots of soul grinders" as the story says he's making an army of them. What I didn't know was how many. So I brought "some" anti large units, but otherwise build my army for the campaign map. After that final battle, and knowing that there is SOOOO many soul grinders.
Example now, playing N'kari - if was in vortex or ME, I'd have a completely different army setup. Would get to use the units I'd want instead of the ones I need to kill soul grinders. Instead, am having to build for that final battle as the Rift Campaign is stupidly fast.

It's really poor design. That second wave that starts with like 8 soul grinders. Then 4th wave dropping nurgle soulgrinders in the middle, that damn near one shot your melee infantry with one volley.
Before anyone tells me to "git gud, it's fine, ur bad" - have completed Daemons of Chaos, Kislev, Cathay, Ogre Kingdoms, and Tzeench. Am near completion with N'kari. The final battle is not "hard" but can be if you aren't prepared for it. An unlike Vortex, where you could bring your army how you wanted - doing so here with say a "flanking" type army....not gonna work, too small of a map - narrow. Like trying to get good use of cav in a defensive siege battle.
Just blah.
Wish they would have thought it out, and instead of a narrow map, made it a more open field style with the forge in the center.
A lot of these factions will feel so much better on Mortal Empires without this damn race for souls.

yeah I got done with my campaign recently and the final battle was honestly super disappointing... like on paper i like the map and what could've been done but they did some wack ♥♥♥♥ that made it feel more like a free-for-all instead of a tactical final battle. When I made it past the first wave and got into the second area I was like "oh wait this is cool! I can set up here with all the varied units I got and have time to get into a tactical position for a much harder incoming wave!

then they rain like 10 soul grinders directly on top of you... my heart broke i was so disappointed :lilimsob: like the unit placement felt really haphazard and all over the place too, it felt like a really rushed finale that soured the experience for me :( if there's people out there who really loved the campaign and final battle i'm definitely happy for them but i hope sometime in the future they take a look at it and tinker with it to make the whole thing a more enjoyable experience because i actually really like the story elements at play, just the mechanics of the campaign are super not my thing currently! maybe I'm just a filthy sandbox lover and should wait for the mortal empires update ig

my man... this is a thread literally discussing the problems we have with the CURRENT campaign. look idk if you literally just zoomed in on "mortal empires" and just ignored all the pretty calm criticism about what we're actually talking about, but this isn't just about mortal empires. op literally mentioned it once at the end of their post lmao, it wasn't even the focus

now if you disagree with that and have genuine feelings about the campaign and want to discuss why you like it i'd actually be open and interested to hear your opinion! but as is it comes off like you just wanna pick a fight with people with genuine criticism about a video game that will not get its feelings hurt by people disliking some things about it lol

I modded the portal mechanic it out myself and it's a vastly better game, worth pointing out, even with -1- turn portals that only appear once, 2 factions got a soul each. Literally from the first portal with it's starter troops man, the AI cheats so hard in that it's not even funny anymore.

So do yourself a favor, google "remove portals warhammer 3" and look up how to do it, you require TW2 assembly kit or the packfile manager, you need to disable in options that it allows saving CA pack files and you have to edit the data.pack (a nearly 7gb file) so it's not exactly quick, but you only need to do it once....

Funnily this is one of the few things we can actually mod out right now.

well, I just did it with n'kari, it wasn't difficult, but nor was it rewarding, it was just lame as ♥♥♥♥ like all the survival battles. for slaanesh specifically you don't need anything except a full stack of exalted daemonettes and maybe a few heartseekers. lore of shadow hero with razor and they just melt anything. just make lvl 3 towers so you can have enough to cover every angle, no point in barricades, certainly not for n'kari

its pure arcade zerg rush silliness and doesnt really play to the strengths of the slaanesh army niche

yeah i was wondering how well it would function for factions with very specific roles. I played with cathay so I can bring a pretty balanced army with lots of prepping but i was curious if it just fell apart for some factions. I can imagine being really frustrating for of them so I'm kind of worried doing it on another campaign. maybe it would be tons of fun for khorne though, lol!

I just get overwhelmed by enemy armies in the campaign. I have to build a main army to break through the chaos realms and defend against a chaos portal in every of my provinces every 10 turns have to pay 1500 to close rifts or fight them and deal with the chaos armies pouring out of the portals non stop. All the while trying to carve out an empire to sustain maintain my armies. On easy difficulty. It is not easy at all. I do not know who playtested this campaign.

And sieges are really hard against turtling ai now. They just sit all over the place and my army gets grinded to dust. Siege artillery is mostly useless because line of sight is blocked all the time.

And the survival battles are way too hard and not fun. Even getting to the end battles is hard with enemy demon armies at every step.

It is not fun to play.

I never even figured that someone had already made this already, thank you so much for the rec! does this sort of thing work in multiplayer with a friend who did the same thing you think, or will we have to wait for workshop?

You will have to wait for mod support I think, once you edit the data.pack file all bets are off. There is a reason you have to hit 2 "are you sure" warnings when you want to save CA pack files ^^

Also the way to do it is to extract the script file, delete it from the pack file, edit the extracted one and add it back in. So this is not really trivial and it's 2 file operations, chances are even if you do it 1:1 just saving the script file a minute later would break the hash (if it uses proper hashes, and not just weak hashes). But I am not 100% sure, I never play MP in TW games.

Normally when you mod WH2, you open pack file via a database supplement so you can edit values and save them into mod files (basically just the lines you changed are saved once you clean your mod file). But all that requires full mod support ala WH2.

awesome, thank you so much! sounds like a fun way to do some more fun sandboxy campaigns which is definitely what I've been craving to play lately haha. hopefully we get it soon, I'm dying to play big goofy sandbox campaigns in co-op like I did all the time in 2 with the new and improved chaos armies!

I just position where the soul grinders drop.....every campaign, and swamp them before the nurgle ones start firing. But yeah, it's a blah, messy battle. Belakor isn't even tough to bring down.

Just finished as N'kari as well. Again, wasn't hard, and as you said, not rewarding. Just meh. Did enjoy watching my Fiends wreck nearly everything.

what difficulty are you playing on?

I just won my first campaign and I think it suck hard. I didn't like the vortex campaign but at least collecting shards (or whatever it was) was connected with expanding territory, which is what total war games are about. But here you can just grab like 3 cities and stay there doing absolutely nothing, and just go into the portals as soon as they show up. There is absolutely no point to doing anything but waiting for that portals to appear. When I realazed that in like 60 turn I was basically just clicking end turn for X hours until the final battle.
