Patching is still awful, even worse now.
Patching for Total War games has always been awful, it's always had to repack all the files and overwrite them.

It wasn't that bad with Warhammer 2, ok it was 60GB of files, took like 20-30 mins on an SSD. As long as you had an SSD you were alright, HDD, which is never recommended anyway, would take a long time.

But this game is 120GB, that means patching is going to take 1 hour for an SSD, 1 HOUR???

9 times out of 10, our downloads are faster than the actual patching. It's ridiculous.

200MB patch takes 2 mins to download but 1 hour to patch. How is that acceptable? Something needs to be done.

Never, ever, spent that much time patching the game. Assuming what you said is true, then this streamers rig is either heavily loaded with other intensive software (I had this once on a warframe update combined with vegas pro), or his rig is terrible.

Either way, the alternative is much worse. You have no idea what you’re asking for.
well they could do like gamepass, not compress the game at all, then we wouldn't have to unpack all the files before playing.

Look above, it's not an individual issue, it's a widespread issue with all Total War games.

I have never had that happen. I thought when that happened it was a case of people messing around with the download trying to finish it early or close it.
Nope, if you look above you can see all the people complaining about the same thing in the other warhammer games

If you attempt to pause it, or stop and restart it, it corrupts and files and forces you to download the entire game again. Learnt that the hard way.

Then we have monstrously large downloads, which is ideal either.

Well, even with SATA SSD it never took more than 10min for me, which I consider to be OK. Anyway, good luck with WH3.

So yeah, like I said, it is not my issue ahaha. I am on an M.2 SSD, so hopefully it's not that long, but apparently you need the same space the game takes up free on your drive, imagine clearing 120GB every patch...

I see that we have a misguided youngling thinking that download speed and installation speed is the same thing. It is not.

See, back in time we used one type of patching only, replace patching I suppose you could call it. Simply put you would download the new file, it would be cut and pasted into the destination folder. The temporary downloaded file would get deleted.
That was a slow method, a method that is rarely used today as it tended to have to replace. A lot of files when patching.

These days we primarily do merge patching, that is to say that you have a piece of code which is merged into a file either to overwrite specific areas and/or add new areas. This saves a lot of time, but with the draw back that.. corrupting files can occur. The temporary file for mergin would be deleted.

None of that are actually relevant to your issue. Your issue can be many:
- The route with which your pc communicates with the steam servers is congested slowing down download speeds.
- Your internet sucks.
- Steam content servers are congested. This happens fairly frequently on game launches btw.

Not to mention that the threads you pulled up are 2+ years old. Now, Warhammer inparticular has a reputation for having issues on Steam especially with download. Things that are 70mb takes hours to download and that is purely an issue with Total War and Steam.

Now, please. You have been educated. No more nonsense about I have to clear 120gb of data everytime I patch.

Nope never seen it so bad.
Maybe it's your machine? Is your SSD full to the brim?
Steam like to eat space to duplicate things.

200mb patch tends to take 20-40 secs tops.

Lots of people complain because lots of people don't understand what is happening. (Extra space free) or have bad mechanical drives.

Tf are you on about lmao. I literally said it was installation that caused the amount of time. I even said the download is faster than the install.

2+ years old, how does that matter? Same systems, same engine, same issues.

To reiterate for you, download speeds are fine, the games download takes no time at all. It is the installation of said download which is the core issue, that is what makes it take so long. There are numerous reports from 2021 if you want them reporting the same issue. Patch downloads quickly, then takes 20-30mins for said patch to INSTALL.

As you said, Installation speed is not the same as downloading speed, it seems you have mixed them up.

Reading is always cool to do btw! You have been educated.

Edit: I'll also point out I said "Apparently" and in no way suggested that you had to clear that 120GB out for it to patch. It was purely speculation.

Like I said, it will concern this game. Warhammer 2 was not that bad, it only took 10 mins or so for a patch to fully install, but this game is twice as big, if not bigger, which is why I predict it will take significantly longer.

I can assure you, I know exactly what is happening.

Press X to doubt. You just said it was wide-spread issue across all the TW games. Seems like a complete non-issue to me.
Butcher 16/fev./2022 às 11:12
Just download it on release. Unpacking preloads indeed takes more time than downloading if your internet speed is not too slow.

Well the people complaining beg to differ

I haven't had the issue for a while, but seeing a streamer have it live seems to suggest to me it's back.

The initial unpacking is fine, just hate the patch unpacking.
