Placing inventory items around your town

I read in multiple places that if you drop things like clay bowls and such you can use the Use button to pick them up, well yeah, I pick them up, but they go right back into my inventory, which isn't what I want to do. Is there a way to pick them up in the world and maneuver them around i.e. House Flipper style or am I going to have to take a guess and drop them out of my inventory and hope the food lands on the plate? Thanks!

You may not have noticed, but when you look at the object, you have two options: press E and you pick it up and it goes into the inventory, second option is to hold down E and grab it.

To manipulate the object, you need to hold E until you're finished. So hold E, and you can move it with the mouse. To rotate it, click and hold the left mouse button. Place the object where you want it, then release E.

One thing to add; you can only grab a single item. It won't work if there's a stack of them.

Whenever I drop something, stack of 1, theres usually only 1 option and its tap E to pick up, occasionally I would have the Hold E option but both of them just returns the item to my inventory. I've tried tapping E, holding E, tried it on many different single items and it returns it to my inventory every time.

I checked it out in my single player games, I can grab things I own, can't grab stolen goods, which is probably my issue as all of my decorative things has been stolen.

I'll check to see if multiplayer has that issue later on when I get on, thanks for the help so far!
