MD isn't built for that, so would have to be recreated pretty much from the ground up. Something like this would be better for a new game, not to adapt an existing game not designed for it.
New players would spawn in villager camps and do nothing but wait until someone picks them up, assigns them a house, a job, ...
They do what they are told aso.
The idea is fascinating, but I don't see it fit in the current code in any low-effort way. (Which most RP's start out with, low effort and grow as the community for RP in the game does)
As a RP fan you can still do this, but it wont be massive rollplaying in active player numbers.
You can only connect with 4 people at the time, but people could take over when one logs out either in their own or the (now free) position of the player whom disconnected.
You'll have less of the laughs and run-ins with that 1 guy you remember for months, but, if you work the idea out within the current limitations you could make it work and the community for it will grow.
I'd suggest making a post (with atleast a semi worked out idea) here
