What the ♥♥♥♥ happened to spears?
Why the actual ♥♥♥♥ are spears so weak now and animals so strong? Used to be you'd headshot a wolf and they'd die, now good luck even landing it because the spears throw like a brick. Came back after a year and the game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid early game now. Any advice hear aside from just setting animal health and damage to 0?

Spears had to be rebalanced when the new weapons were put into the game, and they no longer fly like fibreglass javelins because the physics engine finally seems to understand that Racimir isn't Superman and can't throw an awkward heavy object 50m like a baseball.

Advice? Build a hunting lodge, get two linen threads and a log, and craft your first bow. Spears really aren't intended for much beyond either using them as melee weapons or else throwing them at something that will let you get close like a crow. They've been shoved below the power curve, so to speak.

So no hunting at all until I build a building that requires me to have tech points already and the starting weapon is completely useless making any sort of exploration or going to specific spots for builds impossible.... They need to roll that change back or get rid of the weapons and armor entirely. If you don't one shot something hostile with a spear, you're dead because the combat ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sucks and always has. Your advice just tells me early game sucks now and there's no point in playing anymore.

Ok first calm down and stop acting like a spoiled child. Bows are easy to obtain early game. Just explore the map and you will find broken carts and abandoned camps. I almost always find a bow among these in the first year.

Or... you could adapt and learn how to throw with them. I play on animal health 400% and i do just fine with wooden spears. Took a bit of practice to learn the angle, but it works fine now. Try on deer and moose first, they are harder to miss.

Or with other words: "git gud kid".

Alternatively, look for a bandit with a crossbow - kill them and loot the bow; crossbows are great for headshots. Although, if it comes to wolves, bronze or iron axes work well too and you can find those all over the map, even in the early game

This may or may not be helpful but now might be the time to try out other weapons like our old friend the axe. And as soon as you can get a crossbow, preferably iron even if you have to pay for it and make poison bolts. I also think the devs have decided early game you should be running from wolves which actually makes sense, and avoiding the big critters until you are well equipped. I personally always thought spears were poorly designed but that might just be me not being gud enuf. LOL :medidynasty_rabbit:

The problem with spears now is that their range is way shorter then the shortest distance you can approach any animal

That's not the case; as I hunt rabbits, birds, deer, moose, foxes and badgers with wooden spears without an issue. And this is early game with no points in sneaking yet and no access to camouflage potions.
(I didn't try with the predators, but i wouldn't advice trying to face those with only a wooden spear.)

That's not the case;

Then your game is different from mine for whatever reason. Even rabbits run away before I can aim at them. The aiming is awkward too, I just gave up on them entirely. Pretty much a useless weapon now.

I impaled a Wisent last night with a Wooden Spear before it even noticed me.

I got a second spear in it as it charged and then proceeded to juke and jive until I finally took it down with an Iron Axe.

Even throwing stones is deadly with some practice.

Reductio ad absurdum.

You might as well roll on the ground kicking and screaming about how you're taking your toys and leaving.

I don't usually like this sentiment, but I think it's on point this time.

Just because you can't play the way you used to or the way you want to doesn't mean you can't play at all. (Unless, of course, this change is just so egregious to you that you can't get past it.)

Otherwise, maybe don't expect anymore to take down big game with a wooden spear. Or maybe don't use the spear at all. Or maybe don't expect hunting to be as simple as it used to be. Or maybe focus on whatever hunting you can do in the early game and then progress into big game later as your technology improves.

Another Chronic complainer, check their post history and quit wasting your time trying to reason with them. This community has always been one of the most respectful and helpful to newer, or even long term player with questions. People like this one ruin the normal vibe.

You can kill rabbits without weapons. Just run after them and keep punching/kicking them.
