Yes and yes. Just make sure you put it in the right storage (resource storage building or food storage building).
For each item it shows in the description (either in your inventory or in the knowledge tab) what storage building it should be in:

How it works is like this:
A worker will first look in the chest of his work building for both the tools and the materials he needs. If they are not there, he'll take them from the resource storage building (or food storage building in case of food items).
The other way around; when he produces items, he'll put them in the resource storage building (or food storage building) first. And only when that is full, will he put them in the chest of his work building.
Because of that, your whole village can be completely automated, where some workers will make tools, that other workers use automatically for producing other things, and some workers will use to collect the materials needed for the first group to make the tools in the first place :-)
Quite right .. I just find the colour change a lot easier (but I'm old and half blind :) )
so green is good and red not, dident notes the color change before haha
i did build a few more resource storage and now i can have 9k storage
