Obviously it's a skinning skill issue. But it's less painful to just blame the animal. I know, from experience :D
You don't do anything. The mission will expire. Press "J" to look up in your journal when that will be.
However, there's consequences. Failing the King's assignment results in higher taxes, a worsened relation with the King, has an influence on your people's happiness (happy when it's a bad King, sadness if it's a good King) and will count towards dethroning the ruling monarch (I believe 3 failures is the magic number to replace him).
Maybe interregnum isn't such a bad thing after all :P
Thanks for your tips. This might be the point of the J button. I don't want to slaughter anyone other than people and animals that attack me. The exception is the domestic animals that are born on my farm, which I also use for meat production. ;-)
