Deer dodging arrows
Ok serious question, what is up with this? Why do deer duck or turn instantly the second I loose an arrow?

cause it is annoying, valhiem does the same.

best way to deal with this is get the crossbow, go buy a wooden one somewhere and bolts, 10x better then the bow and alot more user friendly.

Thats why I hunt wisents lol, they come to you, are slow and have the turning radius of a Daf truck, Dont even need a bow to kill them if you dont want lol, axe is fine. Plus give amazing amounts of meat and leather

Definitely -- Except if required to fulfill a quest, there is little reason to hunt deer. The payoff both in materials and experience is low, and they are the most difficult to hunt. Wisents are the best in materials and (almost best) experience, and are fairly easy to kill, once you learn to chase their tail with an axe or other melee weapon (not a spear, which is a close-ranged weapon best thrown immediately before melee). Wisents don't run; their only advantage lies within their inflated hitpoints and the great damage they CAN do if you are silly enough to go head-to-head with them.
If you want quick and easy mats and experience, boars are plentiful, easy, give lots of mats, and very good experience too.

But deer are just for looks. Hunt something else.

You know deer do that in real life right? As soon as they hear a gunshot or a bow loose they duck down.

The deer that stood still, looked you in the eye, and thought they could eat arrows and poop sawdust and feathers..... ALL died. The darting, dodging, elusive, very fast deer largely survived, bred for many generations, evolving into today's version.
-----OR------
perhaps they bribed a dev or two for better AI ?

Write your own theory. If you still want to slay bambi, you could try max points in bow skills and try sneak, crouch, and camo potion. ymmv

You must be blind or lying.

IDk, I haven’t experienced that. As we commented before in other threads, some animals—deer, rabbits, etc.—are harder to hunt now; they are too jumpy and detect you from very far away (in my opinion, rabbits aren’t worth the hassle for what you get when you can use a trap.).

So I see deer moving all the time; they remain still but for a moment, and they keep moving. That brief time is when you should shoot.

I feel two things may be happening:
  1. Bad luck; perhaps as you shot, the deer moved, a coincidence.
  2. Perhaps you didn’t miss; your arrows are not powerful enough. ATM I am using poisoned bronze arrows, and I can only kill a female deer with a perfect head shot, but in most cases, especially with male deer, I would need more than one shot. worse if you are using cooper or simple wooden arrows. So perhaps you are not missing; you are hitting, and in that moment, the deer runs away.

Peraps, you are right, but I don’t see why developers would do the hassle to program animals to do that just to annoy gamers.

Keep it civil please.

As for as the animals in the game; since the co-op update they were made to detect you from much further away now. I know there was a bit of rework on trying to make them act more natural with foxes (as that they sometimes come bite you before running), but i don't know if anything was changed about deer being more skittish. It might just be them detecting you from a further distance than what you are used to.
Though there was a post a while back of someone saying they seem to react purely to the mouse pointer of a weapon being on them; though that isn't my experience (I tested it and it doesn't make them react for me as long as i'm not being detected).

Putting points in the camouflage skill (i forgot what it's called) so they don't detect you as easily helps a lot now. There's also a potion of camouflage that should help you with not being detected so easy.

In open fields with iron crossbows, it is possible to oneshoot them before they realize it. Remember to aim slightly above the head or neck, this works best.

Okay maybe we should have kept quiet about the wisents lol, their speed seems to have significantly increased in the last update.
Although it wont probably matterr that much

Okay I take it back, it does matter you def need a bow for wisents now. Great change imo

I love the hunting aspect of this game. Dear Dev, is there something to help an old gamer whose hands shake a lot? I loose a lot of arrows before I get a hit. Heck I have even thought just playing by myself (in game) and just hunting. Skip farming and all that. Yeah I know you all are going to laugh at me, it's OK :)

I wouldn't laugh about that. It's your game you can play it how you like. In the single player map, there's someone who sort of lives that way. I don't know why you couldn't do that yourself as a challenge mode.

lol how much hunting have you done? I Hunt, gaming second and if you have a lined up shot and no other sound spooks the deer its a hit. If your aim is right.

So I'm not sure what you thinking or hearing, a gun shot hits before the sound wave hits the target! You know what go hunting, don't make a sound for 2 to 4 hours and shoot! with that said make sure you know how to aim.. then make comment on hunting!

Even if you use a low calaber gun (hand gun not for hunting} "handgun bullets are subsonic, so it is the sound that reaches first. However, since they are about 90% the speed of sound, at 100 feet (30M long range for a pistol) the bullet is only 10 feet (3m) behind, or 1/100 of a second. Most rifle rounds are supersonic, so the bullet arrives" it will still hit you be for you move!

Oh more thing the faster an arrow travels, the flatter the flight trajectory and less deviation from wind. Recurve bow arrows can travel up to 225 feet per second (fps) or 150mph while compound bow arrows can travel up to 300fps (200mph). Simple googe search. lol
