There are bandits you can come across while exploring the wild but you can run from them if you want. The biggest threat is the wildlife I find.
But the thing is this is the most "play the game as you want" game I've ever seen. Story is optional, quests are optional, difficulty is optional. There's a check box or a slider bar for just about every aspect of the game. I've seen some people doing solo Racimir plays where they ignore the town building altogether. They just get a wife, a kid, and that's it they try to play the game with just their family exclusively. I guess that would add a bit more "survival" element to it as you'd have to do so much yourself and only have help from your wife and eventually son, not have an army of townsfolk getting things for you and making you money.
So it's a mix of survival, rpg and city management, with emphasis on the city management aspect.
Like 7C said, both the survival and rpg part is rather light. But the game is a perfect sandbox to make up your own story and rules for your playthrough imo.
