Waterskin with Water > Bucket of Water
Up until now, I always used Buckets of Water to quench my villagers' thirst. But I just realized Waterskins with Water are way more efficient.

Their simpler production chain, incredible durability, and fill rate at the Well all make Waterskins with Water a LOT more efficient than Buckets of Water -- about 60% better.

As an added bonus, the Workshop can scrap that job and work on more important stuff.

(This is likely news to nobody, but it's news to me.)

Well, you need water buckets as soon as any production requires water. In this respect, it's easier to balance just one water source at first. But I also enjoy doing both now, especially because the waterskins are only used for needs and not for production. For example, too much milk production cannot interfere with water production for drinking water.

Could you elaborate, please? I get how the production cycle is simpler (log --> plank --> bucket --> water versus leather-> waterskin -> water means a 1-step difference), but I miss the rest of your reasoning. You need 2,5 waterskins to have the same amount of water as a bucket, so... yeah...

Each use of a Bucket of Water is worth 20 Water. Each use of a Waterskin with Water is 25 Water.

It takes a Water Carrier worker more time to fill a Bucket than two Waterskins.

But here's the real kicker: a Bucket will only provide 2000 Water over its lifetime versus a Waterskin at 12,500 Water over its lifetime.

It takes the village a LOT more effort to make 6 Buckets than it does to make 1 Waterskin.

EDIT: And a little more min-max math-y reason ... A villager needs 90 Water per 3-day Season. Even with the Castellan level 3 skill, they will always have to drink 4 times from a Bucket of Water. But starting at Castellan level 2, they only need to drink from a Waterskin 3 times per season.

EDIT: Even if they were identical, I'd still keep using Waterskins. Like @Ookapia said, I also think managing drinking water is a lot easier when it's separate from production water.

It's not just the "production chain" at the top level. Consider also the tool usage (durability) that goes into making a Bucket vs a Waterskin.

A Waterskin is 4 Knife cuts. A Bucket is 6 Axe chops.

It takes a village almost twice as long to make an Axe than it does to make a Knife. Using knives for Leather is more efficient than using axes for Planks.

Maybe, but you and your villagers can't cook or make potions from filled water skins. Have to have buckets of water for that.

Yes. You can have both, lol.

Very true, but you can only do without one of the two. (And it isn’t buckets.)

You can also do without Copper, Bronze, & Iron tools; same with soups, breads, & cooked foods of any kind. I'm not sure what point you're getting at.

Are you sure? If you only cook dishes without water and have no mead, potion or milk production, it should work without a bucket.

Where do you get all that data from???? I thought I was doing some okay comparing, but it is clear I've only scratched the surface.

In that case, you two enjoy your bucketless games. I wish you well.

Who said we don't make Buckets? I only said I don't use them for drinking water anymore.

I spend way too much time in spreadsheets. Little by little, I just peel back the layers.

Ahh, so you do concede that waterskins cannot completely replace buckets (which was the only point I was making). Thank you.

It was never even a question. You're welcome.

Hmmmm, so separating waterskins for just drinking actually sounds like a good idea to me. Think I will give it a go. Thanks for the tip.
