Cudgel Issue
I recently made a smithy for the first time and crafted a cudgel for myself. The first thing I was attacked by was a wolf. I swung and swung and couldn't hit the wolf... until I crouched down to its level... Then I could hit it. I think this is a ... bad thing. I think it might need some adjustment.

Sounds kinda funky to me I would think with a cudgel one wouldn't need to crouch. I've never used one in game so I can't confirm but if one does I would say it needed changed as well.

All of the tools have a short range as melee weapons.
For wolves and boars you should be able to hit them while standing if the terrain is flat but if they stand on a lower ground than you then you will need to crouch.

This kind of thing is why I'm sceptical about the bandit fights...

Melee is a bit funky. You basically have to be looking at your feet with the animal right there to be able to reliably hit it.

Doing this I've been able to kill wloves, boars and foxes. I haven't tried the lynx yet and bears and bisent I kill from range with a bow.

Fox are small and I haven't killed one in melee for a while but I recall dimly someone saying it is easier if you crouch for those.

I was on 'even ground' with the wolves, now several times, also boar too. If I use a wood spear for melee, I can hit them without issue. The cudgel doesn't work for them at all, unless I crouch. Looking At My Feet didn't help. At this point, this isn't 'it happened to me once' deal, I've had to do it at least seven times now.

Looks like the cudgel is in the same category as the knife. You have to crouch to hit anything with that. To me it should be like the axe and spear.

It would be nice to know if this is an oversight or intended though.

Is that suspenseful music I hear playing in the background?

I actually just don't see the point in the Cudgel. I've not found a use for it so far. I honestly thought it was for slaughtering your own pigs or something. And i've not had to do that so don't know what the point of it is.

i think it is just an attempt to vary the weapons in the game. I can see how some people may like a wider variety of weapons to choose from. I as you have never found any use for it I don't even think I ever made one.

Ok so there's little point at the moment then because we don't actually need weapons yet. At the moment, we hunt - and unless we're hunting seals, we don't need a club, not if there's spears. So, i guess it'll become more relevant when we have to hit people?

Yes, that's what I thought too. I don't think I've killed one of my farm animals yet.

Looking vertically down on them while you take a swing will connect without crouching. If you walk backwards slowly whilst swinging they get to take less bites out of you as well.

Other than the Range issue, the Cudgel is great. It uses the same Log a Wooden spear does but it lasts a heck of a lot longer. I've been smiting all sorts of stuff with mine and it's still the first one I made and it is only down to 86.5% durability. Sure, I can't throw it but when the wolves just run up to you, You don't need to. In fact, while the spear has more reach, it still breaks in like 3 hits. Really annoying that.

I wasn't even aware that the Knife 'could' be used as a weapon. I would have done before if I'd realized it was another Range issue.
