How do you "Use" shields?

I've made and equipped a shield, but how do I use it (it doesn't show up on my character).

Figured it out, you press F

To clarify, you press F to get either the torch or the shield ready and then you can hold down F to switch between them.

If you activate the screen hints (that show you what keys you can press on the right), all should be very clear.
