Is there an ending?

Im particularly interested in single player is the game more like a sandbox or is there like a story with an ending.

Do you reach the point where you "win" and see credits or do you stop because you had enough of the game?

The story has an ending, but the game doesn't end there. It's more of a sandbox, and the story is optional. And after completing it, you can continue playing as long as you want. The game is in fact endless, since all resources respawn eventually, and while your character dies of old age; if you have an heir 18+, you keep all you had and had built, and continue playing as your heir.
