Are there any unique Villagers to recruit?

That depends on which map you play. In Oxbow no, in Valley yes (through quests).

Not in the Oxbow. Highest skill they can have is 3.
In the Valley there are 6 special ones with a higher skill and their own little backstory; each you can recruit by doing a quest you get from wife or son.

Edit: since the latest patch, it seems there are some special recruits added to the Oxbow that can spawn in specific places.

They were added with the heir update; so quite a long time ago.

I guess i just forgot about them, lol After looking it up,,,, all their quests are done in my valley save game.

I think there is at least one special recruit in Oxbow. There is a ruin on one of the islands south of Klonica and today (day 1 of summer year 1) when I explored it, I found an old woman in the top room with the herbs, who had high stats and joined me. I didn't have a house for a villager yet, so when I was killed by a falling tree later that day, rather than respawning, I reloaded my earlier save thinking I could just recruit her again when I had her house built. But unfortunately she wasn't there when I went the second time. I think maybe I'll restart and see if I can find her again.

I found a special villager in oxbow just now. One guy in a camp, talked to him and found out he was a bandit. I opted to forgive him and accept him into my town. Had a 6 on extraction and 2-3's scattered across the rest of the skills.

These are good new features from the new update. So far I've only met **** ***** *****, another ******* and one *******. One only has **** ***** ******** and the other wanted a ******* ***!

Really good to know there are some in Oxbow now as well! I'll hold out on recruiting more people til I meet the special ones then (as I want a small organic village without hiring too many people in this playtrough).

I found this person too but in a totally different area. I want to say she was in the North, north east area.

There are supposedly 6 unique recruitable NPC's that you can get from quest given by your spouse. I'm not 100% certain as this is what I have read.
I have found an older lady with great stats South of Klonica on one of the small islands. She sits in a house by herself and through dialogue you can recruit her. She has phenomenal survival and some other skills and what I perceive as an XP boost? She certainly levels up a lot quicker than the others.

This is the answer that was given in June when the question was asked and is still correct for the valley.

Back then there were no special NPCs in the oxbow, but that has since changed with a major update. But the mechanism of the special NPCs in the oxbow is different: they don't come from spouse quests, but spawn somewhere on the map (analogue to carts or bandit camps).
