There is an update coming this year called "armour, crests, shields and more", but we have no idea if that will indeed contain more combat, or if it's more decorative items and items for hunting:

The closest thing to combat is having braindead AI standing still for you to use as target practice with a bow
Actually I would love to get some recommendations for other games, because I do find it difficult to find some (which also include MD's features).
I have some play time in MD, and I find it boring after you have your village running. Nothing much to do at end-game. Part of the "fighting" suggestions stem from this boredom. If it's not going to be combat, then other features must be added to make it more interesting (e.g. make crafting more engaging - not just an animation).
Colony sim games?
Colony Survival is the goat of colony sim games. It looks fugly like Minecraft. But the gameplay is solid. It's the other way around with MD. Looks good, but doesn't offer much.
Conan Exiles has a slave mechanic, quality building system where you can get creative with and lots of exploration/combat.
Enshrouded is like Conan and Valheim, building system is top tier with a whole world you can actually change to your liking.
The Forest is older, no colony sim but survival. Sons of The forest just came out in 1.0 but it's not as good as the first one
In fact, in terms of presentation (UI/ graphics), I constantly mistake this game for Kingdom Come Deliverance, which is does have combat. Though it is entirely a different kind of game.
Anyway, I don't think combat is unreasonable. But it isn't here and that's a skip for me. Maybe Morri is right and they'll expand on it one day.
Your lack of imagination is disturbing, my friend. Why limit the possibilities and mechanics if this is a life simulation? During medieval times, there was no place in the world that wasn't at war. That's why there's no improvement in a game for people like you.
Really? Every village and hamlet in the entire world was at war in Medieval times? Really? The 1000 years spawn of the middle ages did have constant no stop war?
