Upgrading houses?
Most of the guides I've looked up on this to be working off an older game version, but is there an easier way to upgrade houses?

Right now, I have to edit each wall piece, select what I want, then build. If I want to upgrade an existing house, I have to destroy every wall and roof section, then build, hitting E to edit and select the Wooden or Stone. Thats a pain in the butt.

Every guide I look at says there should be an 'upgrade' section from the Hammer menu, but all I see is 'Add Insulation.' And I'm of no mind to go hunt down tons of clay and straw for daub at the moment when I've got stacks and stacks of logs available.

There's no other way to upgrade houses. The hammer also does not have an upgrade option. Maybe it did when the game was in EA, but it definitely did not have one for the last 2.5 years i was playing.

My advice is to just arrange the walls/windows/door how you like with the material you prefer from the get-go. If you go for the best ingame option; then that would be stone with the wooden tiled roof for the best insulation. But if you prefer the others for looks or to mix them up (i've seen nice results from having some walls wood and the others stone for example) you can do that as well. The difference in firewood use isn't so high that you need to use stone all the time.

Morri, aren't folks happier with stone/tile houses? Insulated of course.

That's a good suggestion, but unfortunately, destroy, click, build, E, select, click, click click click click .... on each part.

Yes, they are.
And use less firewood as well

I figure that if I can't build folks the best houses then maybe I'm not ready for tenants. Might have to replace a roof or two but it helps stop me from overloading my town too early with folks I can't afford.

For all the things we know boost happiness (house upgrade, decoration, Family, Parenthood, high skill level in work), I have definitely seen 100% Villagers who lack at least one of these.

So in a perfect Village the people would internally feel 110% happy but only show 100%.

There is an option you can choose in customization called quick build or something like that. If you choose that, you will only have to hit each section ONCE instead of three or four times. I also fall in to the group that only builds a house once with stone, wooden tile, and insulation, for the best mood increase. I build a mix of small and medium houses for birth control purposes. But I also admit that I am a "lazy player" who also uses the no carry weight option in customization.

Oh, that's going to be annoying. I've a lot of houses now. Maybe I'll build new, larger houses, then demolish the wattle houses. Slightly few clicks.

I do as well. Quick Build and No Carry Weight.

Ha, Oga. I do that too, build as close to a fast travel as I can get.

The real annoying part of the post-build house material upgrade is that as soon as you remove a piece you're upgrading: if you have NPCs living in the house you're upgrading, they become homeless until you complete upgrades and manually return them to the house.

Your villagers will be happy and thankful for this.

Just build a new house, move a family in there, repair/upgrade old one, move the next family, etc. Before moving families in be sure you have your TeN house upgrades attached to the house like rugs, shelving, curtains etc., that way when you are done you know everything is as good as it gets. Getting around to it works just like real life, not so much. lol

As for building those big houses, be careful - if your folks have already had one child the next one will pop fast once they get that extra bed and you can end up with 30 squalling babies and no workers to speak of for two more years. Ask me how I know this...

And be careful when moving around families: One adult child will not move back in with their parents, after they moved out once.

I always have at least one spare house. I move the resident(s) here when I need to upgrade the house.

I have both small simple house (3 beds) and simple house (4 beds). I usually build small simple houses with stone and simple house with wood. I always start with straw roof and upgrade to tile when I can make plank. Stone wall need limestone for insulation. Wooden wall need daub for insulation.

Y, it has impact on the mood as well. I should have mentioned that.
Though unless you really are min-maxing, I don't think it makes enough difference to have to feel obligated to use stone houses for everyone.
I'm sure there's a comparison out there somewhere with the difference it would make on a year base per house and inhabitant, but I'm too lazy to look for it. :-)
