My pigs exit through the fence gate, Oxbow
Well, my pigs (Vernon, Marge, Dudley, Petunia and Daisy, got way too smart and nosy (in the case of Marge too greedy for Truffles) and are daily exiting their pig-pen through the wattle gate (wattle fence all around).
Is there a particular fence/gate that will keep them inside?
My sheep are very content within their stick fence and stick gate, and I did not bother fencing in my chickens and geese. "Free run eggs" always on the menu, sometimes roadkill under my donkeys hoofs.

No, animals don't care about fences. However, it doesn't matter aside from aesthetics, because nothing will attack your animals. If you just want the aesthetics of animals in a pen, you can try making the pen bigger; animals won't move too far from their building.

Hi, had that problem before .. If there is "any" gap in the fence .. "ANY" .. the animals will wonder around (exception I noticed is when butted up to river then all ok) Soooooo, my guess is you have a leak in your fence :)) .. Happy Gaming :)) Edit at "Philtre" Yes they do not pass a proper fence. :))

The type of gate doesn't matter, like Sindar said: they will go out through the gate whenever the game doesn't detect they are fenced in properly, so usually when you have a gap somewhere in the fence.
Though I've seen a few reports and saves from people since the co-op update where they were fenced in properly, but still escaped, so there could be something broken about the gap detection mechanism.

It's been passed on to the devs.

I don't even bother fencing mine in. I haven't experienced the animals wondering too far. Nor have I lost any.

I do however, make sure there are no wolves nearby. Don't know if it's still a thing, but a while ago, on one of my early saves, I was loosing livestock and there were wolves nearby. I build over the spawn point and the disappearances stopped.

You can use the low wattle fence under the gate and it's relatively invisible and we can still walk over it but the pigs and other animals obey it like it's a fence and stay put.

The pigs do not escape through a gap, they walk out of the gate!

Yes. They do that when there's a gap in the fence so the game registers that they aren't enclosed properly and are allowed to go anywhere they want. They then go where they want to go still being hindered by the normal obstacles; so they won't walk through an obstacle like a fence, but will use the gate instead.

Thank you Morri, will check my fence then for gaps.

Had the same with chickens, a bit sad that I've wanted to create an area for them and they just ignore the fences

I always put the gate up first, then mark out the fence from the gatepost all the way round WITHOUT stopping, except for the 'click' on a turn point, thus all the fencing is complete (in blue) back to the gate. Then I build the fence with my hammer. My animals stay put.

I always complete the 'paddock' and building. I also put in animal feed before getting the stock.

Hope this helps.

Thank you The REAL chris, will try this as well. So far, they still escape despite the fact that there are no gaps.

Make sure it's just a singe LEFT click. If you do a right click that will break the fence and you WILL have a gap. Don't stop the fence then restart what you think is 'close'. there is still at least a one pixel gap and that is enough to allow them gate access. Just a single left click allows you to turn and continue.

I hate it when my finger twitches and catches the right button.. If that happens you have to knock all the fence down and start again....

I am only playing The Valley, but I assume it's the same on Oxbow. I assume you are on Mouse/Keyboard :)

what about children? i built a very nice playground for them, but they dont care at all about that fact. I tried now without success to built a fence around them and force them to play there WHERE i want them to play, but NO, they magically teleport themselves through all fences!
How to fix that?

but best would be: a NEW job for a settler who takes care of all the kids 2-7y (age) in town for also "boost" their skills, depending on who takes care of the children.

what u guys think?

Absolutely love the idea!!!! Especially if you have an over 55 year old lumberjack or miner woman or man who says they are a bit tired or wanting a rest. :D
