Ah, so it may be my animal HP setting preventing this. I usually leave most of the settings at default. Since I get annoyed/destroyed by the wolves, not sure I want to increase that setting at this moment.
Forget about spears except as a short range attack. Throw one if you have a chance, but rely on an axe for close-in work. If throwing a spear is going to leave you unprepared to be ready with your axe, just forget the spear altogether. In my first Spring season I could kill everything (even in packs, strategically) with a stone axe, without potions on default game settings. I did hoard and use whatever apples I found for regeneration, though.
Lastly, though I am dismissive of spears in this post, I later came to appreciate them when the situation is right. But for close up, in-your-face combat, a spear is not a good weapon, and the axe is.
