What has happened with hunting deer and moose?
Hello

I just started playing the game again, haven't played since september 2023.
I'm playing the Valley map

What the h... has happened with the amimals (deer, moose) when you hunt them?
When you try to sneak, you can't get within range of the bow before they start to running away.
It was perfect in the september 2023 version of the game (can't remenber the version number).

Yeah I got a moose easy but getting a deer to finish the achievement was way to hard even sneaking from far away they look at you then run lol.

learn to shoot from distance, or use potions and run closer to them, than shoot.

Or use Plum Wine and Iron spear+ Running, like a Stone Age dude.

But generally u can easier kill Bears and Wisent, which give a bunch more stuff.

Does not work I was so far away sneaking that I could barley make them out then the deer looked right at me and ran lol.

Yeah, even using a potion of camouflage and having a level of sneak, they still spot you PDQ. I prefer to hunt bear, wolf, wisent and boars because they don't run away :)

That's rubbish. I can make shots well over 100 yards range without using the sights on the HUD. I'm not sure what the maximum range is on a bow, but it's huge.

100 yards is a baseline shot. At this range, vs an archery target, the game gives you 100% of your actual score (iirc), which means anything closer and you're getting penalised (and conversely, rewarded for anything further away).

I remember getting so far away from the target at one point that it disappeared, but I didn't test if arrows can go further than the archery target model can render.

Also, you can ride deer down on a donkey (given the donkey is faster), get off the donkey, and pop several shots into them before they can get anywhere near out of range. The same thing is possible on foot, although it takes a little more stamina management.

And finally, you haven't bothered chasing a deer. If you had, you'd know that it can't move more than a short distance from its spawn, at which point it gets locked into an arc and is forced to travel one way (or the other) along the arc (around its spawn) - making it very easy and cheesy to take down. You can literally force a whole herd of deer ahead of you doing this and chong through all of them.

I would suggest loading up the game and actually playing rather than accusing someone of a lie. Im playing in the starter valley and me and the other post seem to have the same problem. They can run fast in thier spawn only way I got one.

So I took your advice and ran a quick test.

Arrows from a recurve bow travel at least 305m with a high degree of accuracy (and probably further).

That's a massive range (pace it out on the map to see how far), and probably outside the range at which animals render. So basically, if you can see an animal, you can hit it with an arrow.

The bottom line is if the deer is spooked and running then you're way too close, although since one shot might not kill it in any event, you're going to have to practice running them down and shooting at a moving target. In which case it doesn't really matter whether the deer is spooked or not.

I beg to differ. Experiment 2...

In order to prove this thread is complete and utter rubbish, I just crept up on a bunch of deer. Here we can see I'm very close and they're obviously still not spooked. They are, in fact, completely oblivious as to what's about to happen next:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3151284963

A few minutes later, there are 10 dead deer. As you can see, they are all pretty close together, because I hardly moved. This is the (regular) view to my right (of 7 dead deer):

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3151285377

And this is the (regular) view to my left (of 3 dead deer):

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3151285799

One of them (in the trees) is a bit tricky to see, so here is the Senses view on my right:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3151286247

And here is the Senses view on my left:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3151286462

Here is the haul (7 deer skulls):

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3151286787

Does it look like these 10 deer were successful in trying to run away? Does it look like they got very far? Does it look like I chased them all over the map?

No. Clearly not. Because their corpses are pretty much stacked on top of each other. I probably moved about 10 metres in this entire "fight". Basically I just stood in one place and shot them all (without the HUD sight).

So, you want to tell me again how deer spook too easily and are hard to kill?

Just face the fact that you need a lot more practice with the bow.

When animals spook and run they don't disappear... They will circle back to you if you stand still and wait.

phew, i thought we were playing completely diffrent games.

this thread is indeed rubbish. you can get soo close to deer even without buffs and skillpoints its bizarre how "they spot me miles away" is a thing.

maybe you got a mod installed which makes the game "more harder"

At the beginning of my Oxbow game I had a simple bow, limited amount of stone arrows and a wooden club and got wise and selected the island in front of the main town for hunting. Since, as stated above, the deer circle and after I injured several of them with the arrows, I cut them off/ cornered them with the river, and clubbed them to death.
Just try different techniques of hunting and the more money you have the better gear you can afford the easier this will get.
Mowglia: I left the meadow in your screenshots intact for hunting purpose (and herbs) as well :D

Playing Oxbow. I mostly hunt the stuff that doesn't run. For deer and moose I use poison arrows. As long as you get that first hit and don't loose sight, you don't need to take another shot. There is a spot the moose kind of get stuck in the marsh and are easyer to kill. Its along the water between Klonica and the cave at the bottom of the lake.

I have a small mining village with a few crops by the cave. Each season I hunt the boars, winset and moose on the islands across the water. and fill compost bins with the meat.

It's a beautiful place! My village is a bit south of there, near the cave and waterfall. As far as I can tell it's one of the most popular sites in Oxbow.

I'll post some screenshots soon; I'm curious as to how others have designed their villages down there, and other places too.

Maybe in a new thread though. This thread probably sets the wrong tone, lol.
