Can't place fishing hut
No matter where I go it says that either it's not in enough water or there's obstacles blocking. What are you even meant to do? I've scoured an entire damn river!

Sometimes it can be bit fiddly but I can't say I've ever had all that much trouble. Generally speaking place it with the steps in the water (so the bottom step is just in the water) although you can place them well away from the bank if you want to (trying to use them to fake a bridge or a dock for example).

Not sure why you are facing such a problem unless perhaps the river is not very wide? The whole building must be in water.

If the water is too shallow it might be a problem. But there also are no fishes ;) But I built at many locations at Valley or Oxbow map, and there is always a location for the fishing hut, mabye not your favourite one. Just move it a bit around. Maybe you have a screenshot (map) of the location you want to build?

I'm having the same issue. I wonder if it is due to rocks lining the bank of every river in the area, as well as rocks in the middle of the body of water. When I played the Valley before I had no problem placing a fishing hut. Now in the Oxbow, my settlement is right on a river by a waterfall and I've tried the entire length of it running through my village. I even tried a lake a few hundred meters away and it didn't work either.

I'm skeptical that mining the rocks would remove the obstacle since they visually don't move but just say 'Depleted', but I don't know what else to try at this point. No matter where I move the hut to try and build it, I get either "needs to be in water" or "obstacles are blocking" like the OP said.

There was another thread about building a fishing hut in that location you may find useful:

Where are you trying to place it? Was one of the building where I had least trouble to place it. Just had to do one stip into the main river of the map.

Seems we cant place the fishing hut on banks with rock structures or water with lily pads etc. I tried just yest for half an hour to place a fishing hut next to the bridge in my Maple Falls village, and just cant find a spot. It would ruin the view anyway, so no biggie.
I already have my 2nd storage building near the starter town. Im going to look for a clear bank area near that. I'll probably have to place at least one house, probably 2, and a food storage, so the storage networks can supply my fisher families with new fishing gear and food can flow both ways.
When i go to market its nice having a store house just out of town. It's not far past the migrant camp where i hire most of my villagers anyway, so...

If you want to do that for role play reasons, that is fine. Many create a "mining" village, although it isn't necessary. Your villagers will draw things from the resource and food storage regardless of how far away they are, and your fishers will have the same production whether they are housed next to the fishing hut or not. The only house placement that is important is to have your farmers near the fields and farm shed as their production IS directly related to how fast they get to work.
I personally like to have some work places far from the actual town I have created as it creates some activity on the roads to and from the mine, for instance, creating more of a feeling "life" on the roads.
