I played Valheim and there you NEED combat, because there where many enemies and even hard bossfights. Valheim Combat was nothing special, I often missed because of the clunky steering - but was ok for that game. And archery in MD is like in Valheim, yes. But in Medieval Dynasty there are not many enemies - the focus is management and building. Yes some wolves, bears or bison and some bandits. They are only at the begining a thread. If you see them in mid game, they die with one headshot from a recurve or crossbow with a poisend iron arrow. And melee combat - if you were caught by surprise - is very simple in MD, click the left mouse button and hit the enemy with your knife or axe. Nothing more, no blocking, no dodging. But also not needed in MD, cause no dangerous enemies like a troll in Valheim.
As said, this is not at all a combat focused game. It is mainly a colony management sim with a relatively low-key survival game on the side; if you like both of those genres, I think it combines them quite well. There is much, much less stuff to fight than in Valheim, and aside from a couple of "kill a bear"-type quests, fights can be almost totally avoided if you pay attention to your surroundings. Combat, such as it is, is mainly focused on hunting; all of the good weapons are bows. You can run into hostile animals and the occasional bandit while wandering the map; everything can be dealt with relatively easily with a good bow. There are no bosses and nothing will come and attack your village.

But beware, it is not a "you fight enemies face to face ", but most of the time a "you command a big army and they fight for you". Not for anyone either. Was too complex for me ;)
yes the game is first and foremost a medieval life simulator, but the risk of banditry and raids was a thing, sometimes peasants had to take up arms to defend their home and as we progress to run a whole village or city basically, only makes sense we stop being forced to use the tools of a peasant to defend our home.
I am in the camp of yes I want more in depth combat and some of the stuff that comes with it, partly cause I enjoy combat. But also in large part due to wanting a genuine threat that can cause my infrastructure to fail.
Aside from combat and raids, this could also take the form of plagues, random events causing a massive increase in cost of everything due to trade taxation, etc..
However I think alot of people like myself think of combat first, cause its a far more interactive form of interference with the status quo.
I am not personally looking to become a fantasy adventurer, I am not looking to fight alot, I am looking for the potential threat that comes with potential fighting and raids, even though it should be a rarity unless outright sought after.
EDIT: In other words, even if I got a sword hanging at my hip, not expecting to draw it more than every few seasons, maybe ingame years.
You'd be surprised but yes...yes they do.
Yes you do a lot fighting face to face if you chose to do so. If you want to lead from the back you can do that too. Youtube is full of videos of the game to get a idea.
