Actual maximum building limit?
It is 140 right? Could it be raised? My computer has no problems with 140 even after some years. And since I need place for parents to go when kids will found their own families the limit is too tight. Or is it possible to tweak/manipulate? But then my savegames are in danger when it comes to updates?

Sadly 140 is the limit. From what I understood the devs are concerned that more buildings and thus more villagers which will lead to pathing issues that will reflect badly on the game when people start having performance issues.

We do not recommend using a hex editor to edit the limit yourself in your savegames, as this could cause weird bugs and problems with future updates.

Did they remove the low cap on build limits some time ago? I recall earlier versions where you'd have to work to build your reputation to be able to build more buildings. Now as I'm playing with Oxbow and after at least 1+ years later IRL since I played the game, I see there doesn't seem to be a cap any longer. It just allows you to build up to like 70 from the get-go.

Different map, different rules. Oxbow let's your free build all you have unlocked from the get-go.
Valley map slowly opens up the building limit when you complete the chapter (tutorial) quests. Nothing to do with reputation though.

Strange. I have around 150 inhabitants and 130 buildings and everything is working smooth. Loading time is fast, no framedrops, no instability at all.
I have 64GB DDR5 RAM and a RTX 4070TI which probably helps a little bit. So i would apreciate 200 buildings at least.

That number would probably need to be rounded to 210 for the full 3x multiplier if its range ever gets increased in the settings. Alternatively the base limit would need to be changed, but that would affect all the games and wouldn't be changeable in settings (or in save files).

Ah that makes sense. This is my first time playing on Oxbow. Have always played Valley in past.

it depends on what u build, if u play noobie settings and therefore not need tons of animal buildings its still very good performance . IF u have 500 Animals why u play with 1000 % Consumption and need all the animals for food and stuff upkeep, than the performance goes drasticly down, even more when u build a real Town, means all the animals are around one area.

That make sense. I dont play hardcore but not too easy. But then a higher limit would be no problem.

Is there some way to increase building limit?

It really sucks that I have to be careful to choose what buildings I can and cannot use.
Especially since storage buildings do not actually have all that big storage.

Is there any chance the game developers will start to let you just upgrade the buildings instead of having to build new ones?

It would certainly solve the storage problem if you only needed one building, and then just expand the space in it.

Same for the farmer sheds. I wouldn't need so many if more people could work in one.

It makes sense that you start with smaller buildings and work-forces, but this game is meant to go on for many-many generations. And that means more houses -must- be built, and you have to make food for a growing population and their children, and store both food and materials for it.

It's REALLY irritating to have limits.
Especially as strict limits as this.

If a player has a pc that isn't good enough to handle it, wouldn't it be better to allow each player to choose their own limit or have it limitless, based on their own knowledge of how their pc works?

I play on a laptop that isn't even all that good. (AND is dying from age and overuse, and because I never turn it off.)

And I have reached the building limit with zero problems playing the game.

So clearly the limit is pointless.

And even if it wasn't, shouldn't the player be allowed to choose how much lagg they're willing to deal with?

Or have I misunderstood this, and the building limit for Oxbow increases with each year passing?

That would be one acceptable solution, if the point of the limit is to show a more realistic city-growth.

Well it sounds as if the Building limit is in real a Settler limit. So allowiong more settlers per Building would make no sense

"Is there any chance the game developers will start to let you just upgrade the buildings instead of having to build new ones?"

What buildings do you need to build new? All the upgrades are built on top of the original. Doesn't affect the building limit.
