Animals hard to kill?
Since v2, I was having some trouble killing an animal or two, so I did a test. I reduced animal HP to 10%, and gave myself unlimited HP. It takes 20-30 hits with a bronze spear to kill a bear. 3-5 hits to kill a fox. Same with a bronze or copper axe. This seems a little borked. I'm chasing these 10% HP animals around hacking at them, getting solid hits - now that I know their silly figure eight pattern - and it takes a really long time to kill them.

Aim for the head. My favorite is the boar. Two shot in the head at default settings.

They made them a little harder to kill since they give way more mats now and its also about the weapons your using you have to actually step it up to the stronger weapons on the bigger animals. But yes head shots help you out a lot also you can bring down a bear with just a few iron arrows if hit in head you can kill wolf with just 1 if hit head shot as far as spears they do more damage if thrown then stabbing and when it comes to the axes and such they were meant to be tools not weapons can use in a pinch but not really meant for killing bears and such :)

But think about it iv seen ppl complaining about the amount the hunting lodge gets now but 1pc of meat in the new version is like 8 pcs in the old so if your getting 10 pcs now from the hunters thats like 80 back in the day and when we hunt them ourselves they give a crazy amount to us and even more if u have the perks.
So yes their stronger but they give way more reward for killing now only down side is they should have up'ed the carry cap with bigger bags or something since their dropping so much now i mean you might kill 2 bears that attack you and then can't move because they gave so much loot when harvested.

That's why we need tho's carts/wagons etc. to haul all this stuff around ... lol

Yeah I killed 4 Wscent near my village and got 80 meat 25 leather each. Had to make 3 trips to carry it all back.

A-ha, making a little more sense now. Great to know that hit loc matters now. I guess I had noticed that suddenly hunting is way more profitable than some other means. Thanks peeps!

Boars are almost too easy - so long as there's only one or two - because a sidestep/slash with an axe w*rks wonders.
If you update the test branch to v 2.0.0.2, they've reworked the influence of torch waving on wild animals and added the ability to intimidate more animals.

That should also help when you're out number.

Wiscents are easy with the crossbow. If you shoot them from far enough away, they take forever to charge you. Haven't tried up close since the update, though.

Wisent that charge you can be sidestepped, and you can stay behind them where they cannot attack you (so long as there is only 1 charging you). That said, they take a LOT of melee swings to kill. Expect to use 2-3 full stamina bars with an iron knife, ax, or breathtaker.

Crossbow is much easier. 2 headshots and done if using all iron.

The iron spiked cudgel is actually not a bad weapon for yr 2. Getting the big guys in the rocks is helpful. Small ones however, their hitbox is under the rocks, even stupid boars. My last bunch had 5 of them. I managed to chase down and kill 3 but two ran so far off I just gave up on them. At least when the big critters run away they are easier to see. The aggro distance is still stupid large though but I guess that's the dev's idea of a good time. :steamdeadpan:
I love this game but the new valley atm is just not pulling me in as much as the old one even though the building spot I have is great. Maybe it will change, we shall see. There are just so many things that seem poorly thought out. I haven't gone to Racimer's but I am concerned about what has transferred there as well.

I have animals set to 10% and I checked unlimited HP. Hunting is the only part of MD that I don't care for, so I do what I can to essentially nullify it.

Anyway. So I hit a boar with a copper arrow in the face. Before I could get the bow drawn for the second shot, his three friends hit me from left, right, and rear at the same time. That prevented me from getting a second shot. I tried using an ax but it takes so long to swing that either they've already passed me by the time the game responds or they easily dodge. I'll still get the lucky shot. Usually it takes another 8-10 wacks at the one with the arrow in its face and a few more for the others. I've found that just using fists is probably more effective since it doesn't seem to have the response delay and I have a better chance of hitting them, even though the damage is less. Naturally they'll run away as soon as I'm close - and even though they started at 10% and are not injured, they are super fast and it's very hard to keep up. Sometimes I do get an assist by one of his friends from behind.

Prior to 2.x, I could single punch a boar and he was done (like I said, I had essentially nullified hunting from the game). I support amplifying the animals' strength, speed, maneuverability, and perception distance for those who want more of a challenge. I just wish they'd allow those of us who find the hunting a chore, at best, the ability to really dial it down. I thought they had with 1a, but not quite.

Normally the adjusting animal damage should work correctly now in 2.0.0.2, currently on the testing (beta) branch: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1129580/eventcomments/4027970580232300557/

You could try opting into the beta to see if it's better now. (Or wait a day or so til it goes live.)

Its the volume of animals that is killing me. I am never attacked by less than 3 at once and there are multiple pack types in close succession to another. If I am running from a boar, I will run into a pack of wolves or wisent or both. Its just too much. I can't fight them all. If I don't kill the initial pack and have to run, i am guaranteed to hit another pack and make them mad. I hate going anywhere at this point because its not survivable for me. Instead I am forced to hike my HP all the way up (which I don't want to do).

If you after food, go to the swamps, and go after the moose they are easy kills.

Today's patch has helped with this issue.

I was complaining too. But the right weapon helps. Get your self the Iron Crossbow w/iron bolts and The Breathtaker knife, You will be much more powerful. Until then hunt after easier prey. Hogs are not a bad place to start, if you can kite them away from their buddies. Because they are much easier by themselves then in groups. They also don't run from you. Deer are not that bad either. They are much easier as your arrows and bows improve.

Iron is expensive. That's why it's better to place a settlement near a mine. YouTube has great suggestions for good locations near mines. That way you can save money, make your own weapons and make good money while you are at it. I got The Breathtaker from a quest in Klonica.
