Early on, when you have very few workers and haven't unlocked all the basic workstations, you will need to do some tasks like cooking food and making tools. Once you have enough people and all the tech, you can automate everything.
As long as you have a food storage building and a resource storage building at least.
Since your people will take what they need from those two buildings and also put the things they produce in there.
There is a chest inside, to the left of the door.
If you are ever unsure of where a specific items should be stored, check the item description: it will say "food storage" or "resource storage".
The way the game always ends up for me is the town is fully self sufficient with little gaps in production popping up now and then that I fill manually. I feel it's a great balance to keep me doing stuff while still mostly just enjoying watching my ant farm go.
