Did you take it near bandits or wolves etc?
Did you jump off any cliffs while riding it?
2 possible things could have happened:
- You had parked it somewhere where wandering wolves got to it and killed it. I'm not sure how common that is, but I did have one instance when i wanted to hunt some wild boars, parked my mount a bit away, and went hunting. When I was walking back to my mount, I saw from a distance it was under attack by a wolf. I rushed to it, but was too late.
- It died of old age. You can see the average life span of the animals if you look at them in the animal list. Keep in mind that this is average and it is possible that they die a bit sooner.
Try to go back to a save a little bit older if you have one to see if that one can help you figure out what happened and how old your mount was.
I Don't think they can...
Interesting question... I mean why would anyone just dump them from their home and not make a few coin, certainly not for the meat.
I had a situation a bit ago on another save where I made a new goose pen, removed the old geese from their house and then picked them up and moved them in the new house. One was MIA, with no notice iirc and took me a while to find him hiding under a fern. (It was early on and I didn't know any better way to do it) It was odd there was no homeless notice on that one either as I remember.
