How old was it?
Did you take it near bandits or wolves etc?
Did you jump off any cliffs while riding it?

You give very little info to go on, but I assume you tried to summon it one day and you got the message that your mount is dead?

2 possible things could have happened:
- You had parked it somewhere where wandering wolves got to it and killed it. I'm not sure how common that is, but I did have one instance when i wanted to hunt some wild boars, parked my mount a bit away, and went hunting. When I was walking back to my mount, I saw from a distance it was under attack by a wolf. I rushed to it, but was too late.
- It died of old age. You can see the average life span of the animals if you look at them in the animal list. Keep in mind that this is average and it is possible that they die a bit sooner.

Try to go back to a save a little bit older if you have one to see if that one can help you figure out what happened and how old your mount was.

I killed two ducks by accidently removing them from their building. Could you have done that? Can also do by using the X key in stall mode. Maybe you thought you were removing saddle or something? Sad times.

Unless it has changed, the only thing not feeding animals affects is its reproducing....

Animals can't starve to death. As said no food means no reproduction and any production from them is at 25%. However if accidentally removed from their home they cannot access food and should have a notification on screen of homeless animals.

Didn't happen with my 2 ducks recently. No notice up top left as I would have expected. Maybe if you X them out the game thinks we did it on purpose and makes no notice, as opposed to just running out of food, which would cause a notice.
Interesting question... I mean why would anyone just dump them from their home and not make a few coin, certainly not for the meat.

I had a situation a bit ago on another save where I made a new goose pen, removed the old geese from their house and then picked them up and moved them in the new house. One was MIA, with no notice iirc and took me a while to find him hiding under a fern. (It was early on and I didn't know any better way to do it) It was odd there was no homeless notice on that one either as I remember.

maybe its a warhorse and it got bored to death.

If you were Monty Python that would be board to death, queue beating the dead horse animation... for science.
Just happened to me. Left the horse in the middle of the village to go hunt nearby. Came back its lying dead. I can access the inventory. Reload a previous save and the horse is gone. There's an icon on the screen for it. But as I approach it, it jumps between 80 and 83 meters. Never getting any closer. At one point, the horse icon flips across the compass like I've reached the spot but it's not there. I open up my inventory menu, switch to horse, and everything appears normal except that I can't transfer anything. It says he's too far away. It looks like the horse and everything on it. is lost.
