Small scale gardening without buying Fertilizer or building Barn?
Fertilizer is non-optional for even a tiny garden plot. You can compost vegetables into Rot, but to make Fertilizer out of Rot you have to build a dedicated Barn. So I'm figuring that if I just want to grow a few vegetables on the side without investment to become a serious farmer, I should just buy Fertilizer.

Am I right that it's Barn or Buy, or Is there any other way?

You are correct. The only place to make fertiliser is the barn so it's build the barn or buy. For small scale, it's very feasible to sell enough stuff to buy fertiliser. I usually buy fertiliser at the start of a new game.

Harvest berries in the summer, compost them, sell rot, buy fertilizer, save money.

I think rot is about the only thing you can't sell.

you can sometimes find fertilizer laying around but that is random.
