no water?
all my houses say no water, WHAT?, I have a well right outside their door, I placed a bucket with water on the floor inside each house, I made one person an attendant to the well, their is a waterskin in the chest of every house, what the bloody hell exactly are they asking for! Is everybody else to lazy to get their own water for the household? Does the bucket of water have to go inside the chest?

Hey you!

They cannot take buckets that you put on the ground somewhere. They can only take them from the chest in their own house or the Food Storage.

To get water from the well an NPC needs to be working there and the production has to be set up in the management menu of the well. He will take empty buckets from the Resource Storage, fill them and put them into the Food Storage.

Villagers will only recognize water available in:
- Food storage. It is best to have all of the water here.
- Their own house chest. Just for the resident of the house. They will consume here first.

Water production: you will also need a resource storage to store empty bucket and waterskin. If you don't have a resource storage, then you will have to manually collect the empty bucket/waterskin and place them in the barrel at the well. The water carrier will only recognize the empty bucket/waterskin in the resource storage or in the well's barrel.

The key to automating your entire village are the two storage buildings (food storage and resource storage). Thanks to those eventually you can have everything set up so you don't have to lift a finger yourself anymore, since your villagers will take from those 2 buildings all they need for their personal needs and for their work, and will also put everything they produce back in them.

Thanks for the help all, ! I figured out some of the water problem when I discovered the the well minder left the settlement, but did not know about how the barrel at the well worked or the buckets in the warehouse or the food storage. The well guy was also in charge of the wood shed, but he never seem to chop any trees , pick up any sticks or make any planks or firewood. I flat cannot figure out how to make my people actually work the buildings they are assigned to, nor make the items from the blue prints I buy. I try to put the materials needed at each building in the chest at the building but nobody makes anything. Only thing I have been successful at is getting people assigned to buildings but not to work them. The whole management screen might as well be Greek to me because as soon as I assign a worker I cannot get any other screens to come up for that building except to hire and fire. also when I assign two people to a house they both become really unhappy.

If the workers never pick up anything sitting on the ground or floors, what are all the rooms in the warehouse good for? Am I suppose to build chests and barrels in all those rooms to actually store stuff in?

First, a person can just have one work at a time.
Second, you might want to start over, look at the pop ups, read the item descriptions, and especially the knowledge tab.

Okay, I did not know people would only work one building, on the other hand, yea, yea, I have read all the knowledge items multiple times, I sill cannot make the assignment screen work properly but maybe when I have time to get back to the game, reducing people's assignment to just one building will fix some things. However, if I cannot get two people to share a house without one of them going ballistic ( and yes, I know it has to be a male and female cohabitation ) I am not going to be able to build enough houses for every single person and the size of my workforce is going to be terribly small. At current I have 12 of 15 buildings , that includes my house and two other houses and therefore only two people , the two who would not be happy in same house so I moved one into the other house when the well minder skipped out.

Assigning your worker to a work building is only the first step.
You also need to say what tasks you want done in that building.

For example, if you assign someone to the woodshed, you'll also need to say how you want people in the woodshed to spend their time:

In my screenshot you can see I want workers in the woodshed to spend 80% of their time getting logs, and 20% of their time collecting sticks.
At the bottom you can see for each product what material or tools your worker will need.
In my screenshot it shows that for producing 1 log, your worker will use up 2 durability of an axe.
So that means you have to provide them with axes, either place them in the resource storage building chest, or in the woodshed chest so they have access to it.

All that empty space is just for you to decorate and place stuff there.
Sadly you can't build chests and barrels indoors. But you can drop stuff on the floor safely; it'll never disappear (unless if it's food, then it'll rot).
There's people that made their storage building look real nice by placing logs there, and planks, and all sort of stuff making it look like a real used building.

I recommend you to look up a guide or a youtube video to help you.
This one explains how getting your villagers to work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paMIBqnuwo0&ab_channel=GrubMagnetGaming

This is not correct. Sharing a house with someone has absolutely no effect on their mood. So if they are unhappy, it cannot be because you put them together. There has to be another reason.
