Merlin69 you craft it just set the barn workers to craft it for you.
Yep sometimes I play subsistence when I want to go on holiday and visit all my bases still love that game. Not interested in the achievements though :)

In the Barn Animal Feed is Locked in red so even though I've the resources they won't make it! Is this a bug?

Ah I see no its not a bug. Something is not unlocked yet.
You must have some skills to upgrade and also check the tech tree,
Upgrade the Barn lvl 3 is the highest in the tech tree.
Do you have yellow stars on your skills points available ?

As Kwalyz already said, you have to buy the recipe before you can make it. You can buy it in the technology tab under 'farming technology', under the 'henhouse'.

No skills are needed and the barn doesn't need to be upgraded either. As long as he has enough farming technology to have the henhouse, he can buy the recipe.

If you are in the barn, or other production building, you can locate the product in the wheel menu, if it is a red bag, just press 'R' that will purchase it and you can start to produce.

If you can't do that then you either don't have the money or tech points (which are also shows)

The red bag might also mean that you don't carry the necessary resources in your inventory. Do you have straw, rye and oat with you?

Edit: if a recipe is locked, the symbol is blue with a lock. None of the items in your barn are locked, you just don't have the ingredients with you.

I fail to understand why I can have animal/bird houses but no animal feed until later in the game, maybe it should be vice versa?
