there should be iron fishing spears
(they exvisted in antiquity and certainly in middle ages)
and fishing spears should not need linen tread (or if it does ALL tools should need linen tread)
Or perhaps both need to have a repair function to fix spears and nets for half the materials?
If you watch the fisher people that is exactly how they use the fishing spear ... thrusting it into the sandy bottom of lake or river to get the fish. Which explains why fishing spears wear out so quickly, with them being thrust into ground regularly.
That may be how medieval people started fishing .. but normal fishermen would see that is bad for their tools and find a better solution. Especially one that doesn't require a yearly harvest of Flax ... or they would have spent their evenings repairing their tools and nets.
