If it's a good king you receive a tax cut and a mood boost from villagers, if it's a bad king you receive a tax cut but mood penalty from villagers.
Alternatively if you fail the quest you receive the opposite so a tax increase, and tax boost for a bad king znd deficit for a good king

To add to that, you can deduce what kind of king you have by his suffix. "Edward I The Merciful" is a good king.
"Edward I The Cruel" probably not so much :-)

There are neutral ones too. Mine is called "The Coward", which apparently counts as a neutral one, since my villagers don't seem to care if i do his challenge or not. (I still get the tax benefit for doing them though).

being good with the king lowers your taxes, and makes you get away with a higher tax debt.

if you are good with a good king it also gives a mood boost to your villagers.

but being good with an evil king gives a negative effect on mood.

I have 15% rep with an evil king, giving me a 15% discount on the annual taxes.. but the -5% mood really hurts
and with him 29yo it will take forever for him to die..

I would advise when starting a new game to restart a few times until you get a young & good king

The good part, yes, but you cannot know his age til you talk to the herald, at what point you might be several ingame years in already.
I left it to chance for my current playthrough, and ended up with a neutral one.

At least they actually tried to be useful.

If you're thirsty and drink a gallon of water, then someone pours another gallon down your throat, is that useful?

It flushes out the pipes really well and helps prevent kidney stones... ;-)

But let's keep it on topic please.

Would a "lazy" king be considered good or neutral? Just realized the one in my newest save is lazy, but not sure what to expect from that.

Probably neutral. I thought my "coward" would be bad, but he turned out to be neutral. Yours probably too. Definitely not good though.

I'm sure my farmers will be pleased though. A lazy king would fit right in with their work ethic. lol

I have a greedy one..
so far nothing to bad.. he wanted me to deliver pies for his party and wanted a mere fistfull of coins to toss another party.

It may be I am used to a 60% taxrate and seeing the excesses of modern capitalism..
but so greedy this king aint not.

no greedy king would allow me to hunt, collect resources and build a productive city in HIS city.
Nor would only tax me for 0.0001% of my annual income. he would tax it at least 90% and
Nor would leave it to me VOLENTAIRY giving him 3 pies and 300 coins, he would DEMAND thousands of them and millions of coins.

yet my villagers seem to think he's evil;)

My villagers believe that our king is evil and undesirable, but the dude gave me 200 coins after a member of his hunting party accidentally injured one of my hunters. I call that a good deal.
