yes, I usually do that.
Unless they have carrots to seed or fields to plow/fertilize.
But I usually have Rye on all my fields during Winter, so no work to be done.

Winter is a good time to make fertilizer for the next growing season(s), or do any other kind of "barn work" like grinding flour or threshing grain. I usually save up the barn work just for winter as my other work slots are usually full.

that's what I thought.

Is there a way to automate this so you don't have to constantly reassign workers each season? Like, can you really not assign workers and tasks by season so everyone does what they're supposed to automatically when the seasons change?

For the most part, no. But there are ways to mitigate this micromanagement, such as using one field for one crop, rather than saving space and taxes by rotating crops through a limited number of fields.

As you play more, you'll find new ways to do things, or become better at doing the things you can't change, and it won't seem so tedious.

exactly what i do. I don't worry about the space or taxes. One field per crop once I get a few seasons into it and have the money and time. Play it SLOW and don't worry about turboing thru the game. It is meant to be played slow and not some level up and speed run type of thing. Sure you can do that but after playing this several times, the slow and steady has been the most fun by far.

Agreed. I started out slow and haven't seen a reason to speed up. I do, on occasion, hurry for some specific task near the end of a season, but generally, I just pace myself.

as the game is, farming is a very inefficient way to get food.
-> as for farmers having nothing to do.. you could ofcourse have so much farmland they would spend all autumn harvesting it, and than do the fertilising and plowing it in winter..
(but thats a hard thing to pull off, they tend to want to walk behind eachother each do another job, rather than each go harvest another field...

in winter you could also transfer them to the barn, in the barn they can produce fertiliser, this still counts as the same farming skill, so they keep using and leveling the same skill.
(alternatively trashing crops into stalks & seeds or straw & grains also uses farming skills.)
and producing annimal feed does too.
so you could save those jobs for winter...

if you want reliable and efficient food gathering all you need is 1 hunting hut.
hunting meat 34%, drying it 66%.. only needs knifes.. and 4 hunters will supply a town of 120 people with all the food they will need.
and it is not dependant on any season.

farming is done for roleplay (when you don't care about efficiency. so no need to relocate those workers either)

or to supply something you need yourself (likely flax, for linen tread, needed for so many decorations) or cabbage (for rot production)
perhaps a bit of rye (for flour to make into flatbread) but as you will only use that yourself.. you don't need much of that.

if rot is what you want : herbalists gathering mushrooms get A LOT of them, hundreds per day.. and as each musroom turns into 2 rot.. thats way more rot than the 4 per cabbage you can get.. sure you can only gather musrooms in spring and autumn.. but you can get so many it will cover you all year;)
