I cannot equip anything

Hi everyone, new player here. I have just got a few people to my settlement and I need to build a couple houses however I cannot equip anything. When I press R nothing happens and the game says my hands are empty. Does anyone know if I'm doing something wrong or if my game is bugged. Any suggestions?

Go to your inventory, select the tool you want to equip and put it in on of the equipment slots to the bottom right of the screen. Once in those slots you can equip them using numbers 1-8. R equips or unequips the last tool you use.

That is what I have done and then I press "R" to equip and nothing happens. It just says I have empty hands.

What tools have you got in what slots? You have to select the number of the slot you want to use first, otherwise the R command doesn't know what slot you want to equip.

I only use R for empty hands. For equipping a tool, I just hit the assigned number.

If you have not used a tool yet, you have no item selected, and the R command has nothing to swap to. Use a hotkey to equip an item, then you can use R to unequip/reequip.

Hi guys, thanks to everyone that helped. I have no idea why the R command didn’t work but pressing the numbers on my equipment slot did the trick. I haven’t gamed in a while, I took a break for a few years, I’m out of practise and a little rusty but I’m sure I’ll get the hang of things fairly quickly. Thanks again and happy gaming :)
