I started on the only island, but I can't build a bridge
I'm new, but I'm really happy with the game. Except, I don't find a way to build a bridge. I was imaging a castle with walls around, when I would finish the game. So I started in the North West. On the island in the river. It's really fun, but I found out I can't build a bridge from my island to the fields.

After research I found out, it doesn't exist. A bit painful to see them all walking trough the water, certainly for the small children it looks painful. will this be added in future? I don't mind it being part of a new DLC. A bridge is a bit essential, because it's an island.

Well if there are no bridges maybe don't build on an island...
It has been requested before, but so far no sign that it will happen.
Also if you are expecting castle walls, you are playing the wrong game. You are a lowly peasant.

Its possible to build one yourself, but it is a very tedious and experimental undertaking. However it would only be for the looks of it and the feel that there is a bride. Your villagers will still walk through the water, even with this home build bridge. The AI pathing will not recognize that there is a bridge.
Here is a video how to get going: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDx7hOx5s5c

I didn't know that. I found out way to late, but I really like the settlement.

You can use half-built fishing huts for a make-shift bridge as well. Video you can find here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1129580/discussions/5/3775742015028609159/

It's not ideal ofc, but at least you can walk on it.

you can build a bridge with fishermen's houses in a row and only build the foundation, filling the gaps with planks

I find if you can get a horse the speed through the water makes it go quickly enough that you ride anywhere without needing a bridge.
Especially as NPCs don't use self built bridges .. or rather they seem to walk through them.
