Keeping a wife happy
I don't have a wife yet, but I have been finding some gift items in abandoned carts and camps. I have three items that would keep a wife happy for three years, after that, seeing the price of these items (expensive) I would go broke trying to keep her happy. Are there items available that don't cost an arm and a leg so she will stay with me?

What I meant was that once you are married you don't have the option anymore to romance her like you did before with the dialog options that increase her affection.

Gifts give different affection depending on the personality of the wife. Example: Pouch of spices given to a Busy Bee: 15% affection increase.

I've not had to give any gifts to my Racimir's wife yet, they've been married around 10 years now. I do the quests if she has them, ask her how the village is doing, what's on her mind. That seems to be enough to keep her at 100%.

I haven't tried this out yet, since my wife is still at 100% affections, but does the gift always increase affection (even if it's less when the gift is less suited for her personality)? Is it possible to give a gift so ill-suited that it actually lowers her affection? (would be funny if it did; the snob definitely seems to be the type for that)

Any gift will make her happy. For me, the happiness meter went from 7% to 15%, never below or above.

Ich schenke meiner Frau immer irgend etwas anderes, ihre Zuneigung hat deswegen noch nie abgenommen.

Morri, for gifts you can't go below 7%. So like Lailantie says, 7-15, never below or above. I do like the idea that certain personalities, like the snob, would scoff at certain gifts XD That could make for some amusing comments from the missis. I very much enjoy their conversations during her quests, but also assume that differs with personality.

I don't know if its the same for gifts given to the heir. I need to pay more attention, I think :) It might also be depending on personality. My current heir started out as daydreamer, but is now a Daredevil. Think his personality change is due to what gifts I've given him, and possibly the outcome of quests.

Before getting married I used the flute gift on several different types of ladies hoping that it may show if one had a musical talent. Most said they wouldn't know what to do with it.

Which I thought seemed unusual, however once married it did serve as a 7% gift.

Thank you all for the various tips.
I think I'm now ready to go wife hunting :)

Hey, have you read some of that dialog when you are flirting with a snob? She is vicious! With her attitude I would actually expect some gifts to not only lower her affection, but that she takes the gift and then throws it at your face as well - hard and well-aimed.

("And that children, is how Racimir got to be wearing that eye patch and is the cool looking pirate from Pirate Dynasty we know and love today.")

If you don't have a wife yet .. Romance all women and get as many to 100% as possible before you select the one you want for your wife. Possibly moving them all to your village so that you can romance them all each day.

Gifts only raise disposition 5- 7 % whereas picking great romance topics could increase her disposition by up to 10% per successful dialogue topic. So talking to her regularly does a way better job than gifts.

Haha I love those little deer carvings! I use them to decorate inside the villagers houses. You move in - you get a deer!
Imagining that it maybe boosts their happiness a bit?
They better be happy.
They got a wooden deer!
