steel products, charcoal and the glorious candle
I don't know if the developers will get to read this, I just want to form my opinions on the game. I apologize if I sound rude.

I'm a bit confused by the lack of technology in terms of steel products. Steel has existed since ancient rome although steel at that time was used for war rather than regular tools. However, this is not ancient rome, this is much further into the future. Steel should be more readily available if at least in terms of steel weaponry for spears and arrows. the next thing I have noticed missing is charcoal, which the smithy seems to have in it's bloomery. charcoal and coal was used for everything such as heating people's homes to cooking to smithing and heating. I know making a kilner would take some time, but it would be nice to at least have return coal to be used as a substitute for charcoal. I'm pretty sure coal existed in the earlier updates but don't know when or why it was removed.

also, I am glad candles exist in the game now, but I would really like the oppurtunity to make them in the workshop using beeswax or fat from the animals we hunt. it just seems like it would be a lot of fun to make candles especially considering how much candles were used in the middle ages.
So these are the thoughts I have on the game, let me know what you think.

As far as steel goes, I feel like you answered your own question. Peasants didn't have access to steel. That was reserved, as you say for weapons, which Peasants weren't allowed to own.

I don't really know if that is true in this setting. Peasants(so long as they weren't serfs) would be allowed to own steel weaponry and armor in those times, especially since they were expected to arm themselves for war. The only times they would not be able to wield steel armor and weaponry would be in towns and cities. Some peasants were allowed to have swords, but not allowed to carry them in public because they could easily be mistaken for nobles. steel polearms were especially popular among peasants, mostly because it was all they could afford, and length.
Other than that, if they could have steel armor, they would be especially wealthy, that or they looted it off an enemy. given the type of anvil we can see in game, the steel kettle helm would have been around and was one of the cheapest, but also safe option for peasants to have for head protection.
